rogerson has been trying to buy it!
He said on racing radio this morning that it looks a cups horse all over for next year.

Paddy 2nd November 2004 09:54 PM

You western folk have gone very quiet lately, I suppose you're just resting up for your big carnival which is just around the corner

Sandgroper 2nd November 2004 11:58 PM

Not sure about the rest of the bunch Paddy, but my visits to this forum are becoming less frequent - a lot more negativity than normal imo.

As for our carnival, bring it on and looking forward to it!

Hi sandgroper, as a keen WA fan from the gold coast, I enjoy your and other wa posts.

Don't let some negative hicks stop you from giving your opinion mate.

Keep up good efforts

JF

On the subject of the Ascot summer carnival, there's a new format this year for 4 of the most popular race dates of the carnival, condensing these into a week-long timeframe as follows:

Saturday, December 4 - Railway Stakes.
Wednesday, December 8 – Listed Jungle Dawn Classic.
Saturday, December 11 - Colonel Reeves Stakes.
Sunday, December 12 - Fruit ‘n’ Veg Stakes.

Going to be a great week!

PS. Thanks JF.

I'm not happy with sunday meeting and having the jungle dawn on the wednesday meeting is a pain.

FremantleDoctor 3rd November 2004 08:42 PM

And why is that umrum. Care to elaborate?

Geez 3rd November 2004 10:00 PM

From an interstate trainers perspective might find the new format attractive.
Could potentially bring over a few horses, aimed at a number of feature races, all happening over a short period.

Sandgroper 3rd November 2004 10:50 PM

Could be right Geez, we'll have to wait and see.

Wednesday is a work day for starters and having so many races close together will only weaken each respective race. that wednesday meeting I can see a full quality field for the jungle dawn surrounded by absolute S**T fields. Instead of having a carnival the turf club should focus on having to or three saturday meetings chock a block with full qaulity fields. At least they're trying something but I not sure it will work.

GOLDEN DELICIOUS

Paddy 5th November 2004 10:23 PM

A little EW Kaprats will do me

Sandgroper 5th November 2004 10:36 PM

Do you reckon Paddy.

Will be interesting to see how he’s ridden from the wide draw.
Can race on the pace or settle back. Bit of speed in the race so might get back a bit.
Let’s hope he doesn’t get too far back.

Paddy 5th November 2004 10:49 PM

Yeah, the wide draw is a bit of a worry in such a good field, but he did win so well last start after copping a bit of interferance early on. I might have a bit more for a place with fixed odds.

How do ya think your namesake will go, if you don't mind me asking (I know you like to keep things close to your chest these days  )

Sandgroper 5th November 2004 11:10 PM

My mail is that David has him primed and ready. Done a treat during his layoff but not suited under the WFA scale. Be pleasantly surprised if he gets into the finish.

Paddy 5th November 2004 11:21 PM

Okay, thanks Perth Placegetter, might include in my multiples anyway. You never know, still a youngster & most likely still on the improve.

So, the big question, is Ellicorsam over the line?

Sandgroper 5th November 2004 11:44 PM

Good question Paddy. If you ignore her last effort in Hannans, my answer would be an emphatic no. Although she’d previously won 4 in a row in WA by an average of around 4lens, she’d only beaten mid-week class. Also had an unsuccessful stint in SA, although did have a few problems during that campaign.

Seems to have relished the short break after the SA campaign and did win the Hannan’s on her ear and improved considerably on her best city rating in doing so.

I’ll include her in my multiples, but at the odds on offer, that’s about it. There’s a few in the race, that appear to be offering much better value.

Ellicorsam could easily go on with it, so if you like her don’t let me deter you from backing her.

Geez 6th November 2004 12:03 AM

I think she can win but too short for my liking. I've backed Prince Of Vasac EW, huge win last start. Also like Modem, Golden Delicious and Redwoldt. Might box those five.

Paddy 6th November 2004 12:23 AM

Thanks again Sandgroper and good morning Geez (no! it’s still evening over there).

Forgot about Modem, great first-up record and will have the services of the pontiff. Have to add that one to my multiples as well – the list is growing.

So Sandgroper, one final question. What are you backing??

Sandgroper 6th November 2004 12:35 AM

Still up Paddy, isn’t past your bedtime? Just after 9.30 over here, what’s your excuse?

What am I’m backing?

From memory someone asked you that very thing on the Melbourne cup thread, don’t recall a reply

Paddy 6th November 2004 12:52 AM

Well if you must know I backed Vinnie & Hugs! Now aren’t we glad I didn’t post before the race

Sandgroper 6th November 2004 01:04 AM

Funny that! Hugs was one of my bets as well. Nothing finishing better over the last bit, but got way too far back.

What am I’m backing Paddy. As many starters as I can, if I can get the right odds.

But if pushed for just the one selection, it would be the bottom weight.

Yeah funnee! I can see it now. Cheers Perth Placegetter

MyHatMyCoat 6th November 2004 01:29 AM

My selections for the Winterbottom are:-

(10) ELLICORSAM
(2) MODEM
(9) GOLDEN DELICIOUS
(13) REFEMME

partypooper 6th November 2004 01:47 AM

Paddy, that would be the "PPM" (Partypoopers Plum Movers) clear cut selection "REFEMME"

maverick1993 7th November 2004 04:50 PM

Hope you guys remembered that tip i gave you somewhere on this thread yonks ago "Maewest" it was worth the wait.
That means i'm one for one in WA . Think i'll quite while i'm ahead

Paddy 8th November 2004 10:17 AM

Yeah, well done maverick1993.
Wrote it down in my little green book when you tipped it.

Might have missed it yesterday had Jason Brown not been on board - one of my fav WA jocks. Nice effort too from a wide barrier. Paid 9/2 here.

Rain Lover 8th November 2004 11:04 PM

Haven't seen a mention elsewhere but just wish to record the untimely passing of one WA's better performed thoroughbreds in Hot Shot Brother. He died after collapsing during a track gallop last Wednesday. HSB was a winner of 6 races and 6 places from 16 starts including the Group 3 Scahill Stakes last summer. It is tragic to see a quality performer like him coming to early unexpected end.

Sandgroper 8th November 2004 11:09 PM

That's tragic news Rain Lover. Hard to believe. I know he ran very well in a trial a couple of weeks ago. Was looking forward to another top campaign.

Geez 9th November 2004 12:33 AM

That's shocking news Rain Lover. I still remember the Scahill Stakes vividly. Nosed out Kames Hope in a tight finish. Won me a lot of money that day. Best racing was still to come. A real shame.

FremantleDoctor 9th November 2004 09:56 AM

Yes, tragic news re Hot Shot Brother. Commiserations to the connections.

Quick post mortem on the Winterbottom. Not taking anything away from the winner (who looks to have developed into a extra smart sprinter – clocking 1:08:66 for the 1200M) but did have the race handed to her on a platter. Have some doubt that she can repeat over 1400M or longer against same class field. Thought the runs of the race were from both Redwoldt and Modem. Both didn’t have the best of runs yet made up a lot of ground on the winner over the concluding stage. Expect great things from these 2 over next couple of months. Hardrada and Prince Of Vasac who were not suited under the weight scale, also put in good runs, both running on well over the concluding stages. I was a little surprised to see Refemme backing up so quickly (won on Tuesday) – not really wanted in the market and raced accordingly.
