Champion galloper Northerly has died after a colic attack in his retirement paddock at Busselton. He was 15. The gelding, who is recognised as WA's greatest racehorse, earned stakes totalling $9.3 million. He won two Cox Plates, two Australian Cups and a Caulfield Cup for trainer Fred Kersley from 2001-03. In 2003 he was crowned Australian Horse Of The Year and was later elected to the Australian Racing Hall Of Fame. |

WA Pacing legend Village Kid also passed away recently, age 31.
He won 93 races and ran 36 places in a 160-start career, earning prize money totalling $2,117,870. He won the 1986 Brisbane Inter Dominion Championship, four WA Pacing Cups and two Miracle Miles in Sydney. He won at 19 consecutive starts in 1987-88. He was twice Australian pacer of the Year. A true Champion! |
