SAAB....

If a runner win SAAB this weekend but not in the list of 37 in the acceptance list, can he/she still qualify to run in Melbourne Cup?. Horses like Natural Blitz, Uprize....I believe Natural Blitz has a chance in it. Good run in the CC...

Sportz 26th October 2005 12:51 PM

Nope.

Raw Instinct 26th October 2005 05:03 PM

I might be wrong here sportz but I thought that the winner of the race automatically qualified regardless of what else has happened.

Sportz 26th October 2005 05:25 PM

No, they have to be one of the 37 horses which were still left in the race after 3rd acceptances which were taken on Monday.

The following five horses have to win the SAAB to get in the Cup:
CONFECTIONER
MR CELEBRITY
STRASBOURG
COMMAND 'N CONQUER
LESTER THUNDERWING

The other 32 are fully qualified and in the following order:
1 MAKYBE DIVA
2 VINNIE ROE
3 GREYS INN
4 DISTINCTION
5 RAILINGS
6 PLASTERED
7 HOLLOW BULLET
8 XCELLENT
9 DIZELLE
10 FRANKLINS GARDENS
11 EYE POPPER
12 PORTLAND SINGA
13 VOUVRAY
14 DEMERGER
15 IRISH DARLING
16 SIR DEX
17 LACHLAN RIVER
18 BAZELLE
19 CARTE DIAMOND

21 HUGS DANCER

Sportz is correct, the winner of the Saab is only exempted into the Melbourne Cup if it is already paid-up.

The only winner of a race on Saturday that is not already nominated for the Melbourne Cup is the winner of the VRC Derby, which can run in the Cup if a late nomination fee is paid. If that's the case then the horse would carry at least WFA.

Raw Instinct 26th October 2005 08:42 PM

Fair enough glad to be wrong in this case although I certainly wouyldn't be in a hurry to back anything out of this race besides Brew a few years ago (I think) this has been more of a graveyard for horses than a strong form race.

Duritz 26th October 2005 10:28 PM

I thought Confectioner only needed to place and he'd qualify?

Raw you're right about this being a bad form race for the Cup (except for Brew) however this Saab is of a much higher quality than most years. Don't let the reputation of it steer you clear, this one is a good field.

However, I WISH they'd gone to the Mackinnon with Confectioner. Just would've won.

You are correct inasmuch as if Confectioner runs a place then he will then pass the balloting clause and move up in the order of entry to 20th or 21st so he would get a run.

Anthony Cummings is reported in today's press as stating that if his horse wins the Derby they will consider paying the late entry fee. If this was to occur then all runners, other than for those exempted, that are below WFA would drop down one in the order of merit which could, if Confectioner runs a place in the Saab, push Lieca Falcon outside of the top 24.

Sportz 27th October 2005 10:22 AM

Yeah, you're right about Confectioner. Sorry.

Leica Falcon's in no danger. There are several above him that won't be running, Plastered and Cartes Diamond for starters.

haveadip 27th October 2005 11:16 AM

Is there anyone who can beat Mr Celebrity in the Saab

Duritz 27th October 2005 03:39 PM

Yes, haveadip, Confectioner can. That being said, it will take a big effort. I thought no-one could beat him in the Geelong Cup and look what happens. There's always ways to get beaten haveadip.

Why is the mare I've been tipping for the Cup Dizelle running in this race? She's in the Melb, fully qualified etc, why run her on Sat?

maverick1993 27th October 2005 03:44 PM

i think she's been dissapointing..they might not run her in the cup if she performs badly on Saturday..
in her form i think she has a better chance saturday..

Sportz 27th October 2005 03:45 PM

They feel she needs the run to find some form and confidence. I must say that I've been pretty disappointed with her, but you only have to remember that AJC Oaks run to think that if she can recapture her form, she's a chance.

Raw Instinct 27th October 2005 05:25 PM

At the time I thought that the AJC Oaks was a great race but the form out of it has been pretty ordinary in my opinion Dizelle, She's Justa Tad & Magnetism havenot performed anywhere near expectations so far and to be honest I am now wondering if Dizelle was just a better stayer of a pretty ordinary bunch. On the other hand I thought the Derby was ordinary but I did like Railings well Railings won the Caulfield Cup which all of a sudden makes that derby look alot better than 1st anticipated not to mention what Xcellent was able to produce so far even if it was in NZ.

Hollow Bullet???

Raw Instinct 27th October 2005 05:37 PM

yea Sportz in between trying to cook tea right now so was in a hurry so I didn't burn anything but certainly yes that is another.

Sportz 27th October 2005 05:57 PM

I meant Hollow Bullet instead of Magnetism, because Magnetism is a gelding.

Anyway, now that you mention it, the Oaks form certainly doesn't look too good now.

Raw Instinct 27th October 2005 06:29 PM

There you go for some reason I had it stuck in my head that it was a filly. Looking at the Oaks field now only Lotteria has really gone on so far.

Real Deal 28th October 2005 07:36 AM

I am one of Dizelles biggest fan and have a couple of massive doubles going with railings and the diva (i have pretty much called it a write off).

But lets be honest, if Dizelle shapes up to them at the 200 and looks a winner-will Beadman ride it out properly and recieve a penalty for the cup or will he finish in the placings?

Please answer this question thinking Dizelle can win-i dont want replys like "can't win, so don't worry".

Sportz 28th October 2005 10:00 AM

Franklins Gardens is now out of the Cup too.

Duritz 28th October 2005 10:29 AM

Mate Dizelle CAN win the Cup. She has a 119 coming on the ratings, with her weight that could be good enough. Leica Falcon also has a 119 coming so if he rates 119 he will beat her because of less weight but her 119 is definitely good enough.

That Caul Cup run was bad, but the track was concrete. Am forgiving that. Her run in the Turnbull was very good, she copped a slow run race 2nd up in Sydney, really liked her 1st up run. She's not going like she was leading up to the Oaks (won at MV over 1500 I think it was along the way) however she is being trained for 3200m. Forgive the Caulfield run, Flemington will have a bit of give on Tuesday, she's a chance. she is certain to run 3200m, and to be frank might explode when she does. Like the Diva, her absolute best might be 3200. I am sort of glad she went bad on the rock hard Caulfield track because now she's longer odds on Tuesday.

Real Deal 28th October 2005 10:48 AM

there is no point winning on saturday though is there! i will be hoping for a good run but i dont want to see her win
