Betfair :)
Anouncement tomorrow ...how exciting !!! could be coming to OZ..
i'm good at picking losers ;) |
Geez Mav this might be good for me most horses I follow follow other horses very very slowly.
|
Good. We need more people on there laying horses. Will mean those of us that back horses will get even better odds.
I am there already, and have been for at least 6 months. |
Gday All
I was just listening to 2ky and the announcer ws talking about the Tassie Premier going to allow the licence for Betfair... He sounded as tho he was reading the funeral notices :) My view... ************ the Tabs and racing clubs, they are the reason I am unable to watch Victorian and Sydney racing at home in the regions.. Bring on betfair... More Power to Lennon and anyone else who is prepared to take the monopolies on |
I agree, the more options the better I reckon. Since the debacle with the tvn rubbish I have steered well clear of putting any money through a tab in protest. I have managed to talk about 5 or 6 mates into doing the same. My mates cant work out why they didnt do it earlier now that they get paid at least the best of the three totes. I have 4 different accounts with bookies and will certainly open 1 with betfair, why anyone would bet through the tab's is beyond me.
Hopefully it gets accepted. |

AAP are reporting the following. Betfair Granted Tasmanian Licence Thursday, 3 November 2005: The Tasmanian Government has approved a deal to licence the British online betting agency Betfair. The deal was announced in Hobart this morning by Tasmanian Premier Paul Lennon, who said Betfair's operations would be subject to a strict regulatory regime. The announcement ends eight months of speculation about the 50-50 joint venture between Betfair and Kerry Packer's Publishing and Broadcasting Limited (PBL). The UK-based betting exchange has operated on Australian racing for three years, but an Australian licence will allow the company to advertise and promote its business. It will also allow it to establish a second global hub in Hobart, an investment expected to create about 150 jobs. The deal has met strong opposition within racing circles, with Tabcorp threatening to lock Tasmania out of the national betting pool and Victoria legislating against the betting exchange. The Tasmanian racing industry has vowed to take its fight to the state's Upper House in a last ditch bid to stop the licence being launched. However, only three of the state's 10 MLCs need to support the Betfair Bill, which Mr Lennon will introduce to Parliament next week. AAP News |
The idea of Betfair doesn't really sit very comfortably with me and I certainly won't be climbing on the rafters to get on it even though like everyone else I am great at backing losers. I could actually do you all a favour. I'll post who I genuinely believe is going to win each race and then you all can back it to lose.

Could be coming ??? some have been using it for 3 years. |
Here Already
There are some online bookmaking firms who currently allow "Head to Head" betting within a single race.
Why aren't those people who are opposed to Betfair's introduction into the Australian marketplace, jumping up and down at this situation? Same thing is it not. dundas lane ......... |

But you don't have to lay horses, you can bet just as you normally do and get better odds most of the time. For instance, on the Melbourne Cup while Supertab paid a dividend of $3.60 for Makybe Diva, $5.10 was available on Betfair. I don't know about you but if there is the opportunity to get $1.50 better odds than what's being offered elsewhere then I know where I'm going to have a bet. |
Fair call

Me neither. |
People that have never used betfair don't understand it...it is not just about backing losers it is about getting a fair price for your runners...as stated the huge price difference on the cup winner....Austote offered $5.50....the whole issue about betfair is choices it is our money and we should be able to decide where to bet it.....the tabs takeout on each race is over 15% the bookies offer worse prices than the tab most times....the TAB hold the monopoly on betting in this country....they think betfair will change that....i don't think so....all it will do is give us the smart people another choice of where to put our money.....the tabs will still make money if you don't believe me just take a look in any tab on a saturday an see all the lambs being led to the slaughter.....when right now there is much better things on offer(IAS, Sporting Bet,Betfair,Sports Acumen,Sportsbet)these are just a few that all offer better odds than the TAB but how many still bet at the TAB do you realy think one more will make that much difference...not to the tabs it won't but for us it will introduce some more liquidy in to aussie racing.
Tell me this if you could back a runner @ $5 and then lay it to another person when the price comes in to $3.50 for a profit if the horses wins or loses wouldn't you be happy. |
Don't know why everyones so excited.
Looks to me as if the Poms and Packer are gonna make a squillion without providing squat. Why an Aussie couldn't set up a Betfair lookalike says something about our home grown entrepreneurs. Oh I hear you say Packer is an Aussie? Here is something you'll never read in an Australian newspaper..."How much income tax has Packer paid the Australian Government in the last 15 years .....?? |
honda
Another thing you will never see in an Australian paper or hear on KY for that
matter is the smear and innuendo campaigns the TAB have waged against anybody or orginisation that have dared to move in on their monopoly of betting in this country. I used to enjoy a bet in Vanuatu until the TAB was instrumental in having it banned to bet offshore, and this rubbish about race fields and scratchings being the property of the TAB is ludicrous and unaustralian. 2ky is run by the TAB so why should they give anything but a onesided view of the situation? Racing NSW is another lot who should hang thier heads in shame at some of the misinfomation they have spouted over the last few months. And as for Kerry Packers tax bills,he can pay it into my account any time he likes. |

Not true, shortly after announcing that Betfair would be licenced the Tasmanian government also annouced the following, "The Tasmanian Government today announced startling prizemoney increases for major racing in its state following the granting of a betting exchange license to Betfair. Next year’s Interdominion pacing championship will be trebled in stakes with the final boosted from $500,000 to $1.5 million. The Hobart and Launceston Cups will be elevated from $200,000 to $500,000 and the Devonport Cup from $90,000 to $150,000. The Tasmanian racing industry is guaranteed $5 million each of the first two years of Betfair’s existence with healthy projected growth thereafter." Also the Premier of Tamania stated yesterday that, " Betfair would operate under strict regulatory guidelines and the licence was expected to boost the Tasmanian racing industry by up to $40 million a year by 2009-10." I think that's providing more than squat. |
PATEZZA
3 % per year .
Re BETFAIR. "The racing industry is doomed /doomed I tells ya." Cheers. darky. |
This whole thing of the tabs saying betfair will be bad for racing, from what i understand as soon as betfair showed interest in Australia the tabs started to make plans to create there own version of betfair here....my guess is there percentage would be a lot higher than 5%

Shaun - Tabcorp have already registerd the name Tabfair, one can only wonder why! |
i am unlikely to use betfair as i am a very small punter/hobbyist.
i dont think the tab's serve us very well and deserve a great kick in the rear. for instance. the austar/sky channel affair is a huge disappointment that has stopped me from watching the races from syd/mel and should have been resolved in favor of the viewer/punter in good faith. i still have a great deal of issue with the racetab site. for instance on saturday i ran out of money and wanted to put some in. it only offered me mastercard or visa. so i tried to enter by visa card and because i had signed up on the original site with bankcard it would not take the visa. so as i couldnt use bankcard i gave up. it is now 22 kms to the nearest t.a.b in this area and we are forced to use phone betting or internet. it is so frustrating being a punter that i feel no loyalty to the tab or the industry at present until they recognise us as customers and that they are running a business that need customers. i think only good can come out of betfair as a competitor because the industry badly needs one. |

Gday Sportz, R U not interested in gaining better dividends for your selections? You are joking ofcourse.. Unless ofcourse you happen to be a TAB employee.. To tell the truth it is a lot easier to place a bet with betfair than it is on a couple of these TAB sites... I can make a place syetem actually retun a positive on Betfair, whereas I have no chance on the tote... The takeout will always kill you.. That is the 3rd Guarantee in life I would suggest that people who obviously are unsure/uneducated about betting exchanges (and it's not their fault) go and have a look and learn.. Forget the crap pedalled by the TABS and other partisans, If you believe their drivel, U will believe that the new IR laws are good for workers... Or that competition has not made phone bills cheaper... and have a look for yourself, do some research.. before making a "me neither" statement... U may well be a convert |
Quote:
Gday honda ( I got me one of those ) couldnt agree more with what you have to say.. The tripe being pedalled about copyright of race fields is absolute garbage.. and they (TABS RACING NSW etc) should know it... The English Bookmakers went down that line of litigation and got absolutely buried, when Betfair first raised their heads. They were smashed in the courts... the same will happen here... All that will happen is that the people who are paid up members/shareholders of these organisations are going to foot the bill for a hefty legal fight.. which they will lose.. Remember Racing NSW were the rocket scientists who took the Sydney Race Clubs to court over TVN... they got buried there as well.. not too many there with high IQ's I have NO SYMPATHY at all for the establishment at ALL.. They have treated US THE PUNTERS as a milking cow for far too long.. and they have treated us with contempt.. I still cant see Sydney and Victorian Racing at home because of these dills don't consider regional racing enthusiasts as important..... but what do they care? I might still be a milking cow, but at least I now have a choice ( have had it for a couple of years actually) who gets to squeeze my teats... |
Hi, Xptdriver.
I believe a similar situation happened back in the twenties/thirties(?) when a radio station had a race-caller "illegally" broadcast the Sydney races from outside the racecourse using a pair of binoculars. The radio station was sued by the STC/AJC/officials re copyright, but they lost, or the case was thrown out when it went to court. Anyone know what the situation will be in NSW? When I try to deposit money into my Betfair account, a message appears to the effect that my credit card is out of date, which it isn't. I can't find anywhere on the site to "update" it so I presume there is a lock on my account preventing me from making a deposit. Hopefully I will be able to do so when Betfair begins operations in Tassie. Go, Brian. At least he's currently scoring a few runs, even though Warney is giving him a few problems. I knew I shouldn't have said anything about Brian - he's out! Talk about bad umpiring!!!! |
Quote:
Try re-registering it. |
i have moved to the tassie tote site. i can put money in there at the local postoffice if i need to.
racetab site is too user unfriendly it wont let me update or deposit either and is too slow. go bet fair maybe the tabcorp will one day take off the injunction and let us watch the races and realise that there is more than one tab and they need the customers. |

or a bank deposit |

Not being able to see the races is the big reason I am dirty on the establishmnet.. they could have done something to help blokes like u and me, but chose not to... I choose not to bet with them... |
Quote:
Gday michael as for NSW... they will not be able to stop you placing bets with Betfair once it is licensed... they cant do a whole lot now as it stands...Once one state licences it, I believe the constitution says something about no restriction of trade between the states.. and terrortories as well I think.. I am no lawyer tho... But I think that is the loophole that allows someone in say NSW to buy hardcore non violent porn, (which is not for sale legally in NSW) from The ACT or NT.. I think that is basically the part of the constitutiuon that will allow it... This Paul Lennon is really giving it to the racing establishment.. Have a read here: http://www.abc.net.au/news/newsitem...11/s1497906.htm As for Brian... Yeah dud decison.. but I will take em after the crap dished up by the umpires during the ashes against some of our blokes LBW... I think the best way to top up your betfair account (you should really only deposit once ya know :) the rest should all be withdrawls) is by bank deposit... Ring the free number ( I think it is still there) and they will tell you how to go about it... There has been a block put on drawing funds FROM Betfair to credit cards issued here, but not the other way around as far as I know.. |
Quote:
As the others said try again, or find an alternative. If they blocked your account they would tell you why. I know they have ip checkers to determine your location, so this would come up in the error message if it were the reason. I would suggest you ring them and ask them. They have a toll free number for Australians, and they generally answer the phone immediately. |

We really are the "lucky country"...... :) |
Quote:
Yeah was the only example I could think of... ( where something is available in one jurasdiction but not another) there are probably heaps of others tho... |
Quote:
Know it doesn't apply to everything. You could imagine the road trips between ACT and SA if it did. Return home to smoke your pound of smoko whilst watching your non violent erotica..... roflmfao.... |

section 92
remember the days of changing trains at albury to travel from sydney to melbourne because the guages were different.
section 92 was brought in to stop that silliness like interfering with state trade by having different guages. also the victorian railways extended into nsw as far as deniliquin in the riverina to take the wool trade away from the paddle steamers. prior to federation of course. the name of the game is better service and the race clubs and tabcorp have got too comfortable and will have to deal with the competition. corporate racing is not a good thing and should be freed up . this might do it. |
[QUOTE=topsy99]
the name of the game is better service and the race clubs and tabcorp have got too comfortable and will have to deal with the competition. The main thing I hope it will do is stop this legal robbery of rolling down divis to the lower 10c so infact a place divi that SHOULD pay me $2.78 gives me $2.7. In the scenario above they have just STOLEN $32 from me. Add this up every race, every day for a year and the mind boggles. Why are the tabs allowed to get away with this:confused: |
Quote:
Does this mean you don't need a credit card? |
La Mer mentions the $5.10 that Betfair offered in the Cup.
Makybe Diva paid $5.50 on Austote in the Melbourne Cup and $4.30 in the Cox Plate. Pools were nearly half a million in both races. Shop around the poms don't always offer the beat odds. Patezza Why didn't Noah swat those two mosquitoes? |
La Mer, there is something you have missed, Lumbasakabayo@hot mail dot com if u want to know
|
Quote:
Yes, you don't need a credit if you make deposits via the bank. |
Quote:
Patezza - I agree that you should shop around and if Austote offer the best odds then go for it - surely competition makes it better for everyone. But you are gilding the lily a little about the size of the Austote pools - the pool on the Melbourne Cup was $405,000 which was very good and the highest pool that Austote have ever had. However, the pool on the Cox Plate was just a mere $48,000 and any bet of any substance on Makybe Diva in that race would have had a great affect on the final dividend. Also you appear to have something against the Poms for some reason - didn't take too well to the ashes loss maybe. :-) |
