First-Up
I’ve noticed over time that many forumites shy away from backing / tipping horses running first-up after a spell. I think in general the uninformed punter does similar and as such backing specific ‘first-up’ horses can provide a nice return on investment.
I normally punt on a $4x$8 basis as often they will run a place (but not necessarily win) at big odds. I select horses that are resuming from a spell of 6 months or less, with a previous good first-up record, that have been rated in my top 5 selections for the particular race. Their race rating is based on the average of previous first-up performances max 3 most recent for 5YOs or older, or best of last 2 for 4YOs or younger. I’ll often increase my outlay if they have performed well in recent barrier trial/s. |
Bwuce, my experience is that most races of 1200m or LESS are won by 1st uppers, as you say often at big odds. This rule also quite often catches the "STAYER" resuming at short distance and jags it, there have been some beauts like this.

You’re probably right partypooper but I have been including races up to 1400 - thanks :) |

Well done! He had a GREAT first-up record and a pretty good record at the track and the distance. How could he be those odds??? |
Nice tip on the 6th bwuce, might tempt me to have a go at the next
|
R6/1 Nice job for a toppy with 59kg. in 'slow' cond't. I had Queen Jill [$2.30p] for 2nd.
R8 My money is on Seven Stars who should win, even if it goes to heavy. 4 or 5 scratchings though so odds will be down and probably no 3rd. divvy. |

Forgot to mention 3 previous placings from 3 starts in the wet too. |

First-upper (3) Elantone Park looks a strong chance in the last at Pinjarra today.
He has performed creditably 2 of 3 first-up starts, the other he had excuses when trapped wide most of journey higher class at Ascot. Won a Belmont trial over 1000m earlier this month. |
Quote:
Finished midfield but well beaten. Interestingly started 2nd fav so it seems I was not on my lonesome in expecting Elantone Park to perform well first-up. Perhaps I should start a 'second-up' thread LOL |
W.A. Guineas winner Cape North returns to the track this Saturday at Ascot.
No doubt he will be well fancied and did win first-up last campaign. But this time around has had a setback or two and no trials that I can see. He also has to lump 59kgs. Think I'll just watch ;) |

Well, back to earth with a thud! A total of 6 bets Wed and not one return!! Progress to-date Total outlay $144 Total return $83.20 |

There are 3 first-uppers Eagle Farm race 7 tomorrow that are in with a good chance imo...Proudly Agro..Show Biz Kid..Deuxieme
Don't be misled by the poor first-up stats listed for Show Biz Kid..he has rated well first-up on a number occassions although not finishing 1,2or3.. In addition both Show Biz Kid & Deuxieme have trialled well recently.. |

Oops! Should read 4 first-uppers..add Daunting Lad..same race.. |
Lee Curtis stable quietly confident that recent stable addition TWANGED will perform well today first-up at Kembla (race 4) ;)

EZY win Captain Wheland!! Multis CW as anchor paid pretty well, the tri just over 200 bucks, the first4 almost 700 bucks! |
GOLD COAST
FLYING TEST Goldie R4! First-up record: 2-2-0-0
|
Tamworth race 6
DERBY PARADE should race handy from a good draw in the big field. Goes extra well first-up and suited the good track and distance. A very nice ew chance!
|
The lightly raced Brave Action Doomben race 6 has a very nice first-up record and should start at ew odds!
|
Orange race 8
ILITHYIA was unlucky first-up last prep then won at next start after being freshened. Expecting a bold first-up performance today.
|
IPSWICH 6
(2) ICEDANE was very unlucky first start (over this course) should have won. Placed and won at 3 subsequent starts. Great chance first-up once more.
|
kempsey today
race 7 no. 3 windon should do well first-up today
|
TACTICAL RESPONSE
The Gai Waterhouse trained 3YO gelding Tactical Response unbeaten at only 2 starts should be too strong for them first-up tomorrow. Gone well recent trials and has a 3kg apprentice claim just to make sure. Might not be much value so you might want bank off with Anniversary Prince, Carry The King and Catbird Kahn.
