Turnbull Stakes Day

What a great day of racing this is set to be on Saturday. The Turnbull Stakes is set to be an absolute cracker, possibly the race of the spring.

Race 1 - Maribynong Trial Stakes
First 2yo race of the season. No form to go on so unless you have some inside word get the dart board out, or even better just watch.

Race 2 - Super Impose Stakes
A tough race to pick a winner here. I have no idea. Possibly Jabal Tarik at a reasonable price. Was rather impressive last start when winning at morning on grand final day, stable has an opinion. There are several chances in the very open race.

Race 3 - Cencept Sports Stakes
I think if Pins On Parade doesn't have too much pressure out in front he can win this. Last start he beat Barbaracius by 2 1/4 lengths who then went on to take out the Stutt Stakes. Nine tales a danger after being held up in the Guineas Prelude and finishing well, On The Warpath will be finishing hard late and if there is speed on could be finishing all over the top of them. Other danger is Pit Lane.

Race 4 - The Bart Cummings
I am rather keen on one here. Light Vision from the Robert Smerdon yard. Think he will be too strong for them here. He has been toying with his rivals lately and working well through the grades. This is the test for him bit I think he will be up to it. Beat Cefalu last start by 2 lengths who as subsequently won since. One of my best for the day.

Race 5 - Scalzo Food Industries
I like the way Tears I Cry won last start at the Valley. Can't fault winning form. Sunburt Land is a good up and comer. Won easily last start and before that race he ran second to Barlinnie and beat home Extend. This form around Barlinnie has been super strong with almost everything that has run within a few places of it having won since, admittedly in weaker company. Looks to be an improver and will definetly be a good e/w chance.

Race 6 - UCI Stakes
Another one I am super keen on here (and I think many others will be). Vormista, this looks the race for her. Fast finishing second last start behind Gold Edition and up to the 1400m looks ideal. Think she will be very hard to beat.

Race 7 - Edward Manifold Stakes
Jestatune was good last start, finished second behind what was arguably the best filly in the land Gabbidon. I think she must be the one to beat here. Riva San is one to watch, she has form around Pins On Parade so watch closely earlier in the day. Has since gone to Adelaide and won.

Race 8 - Turnbull Stakes
What a race this is going to be. I was leaning towards Haradasun but after the barrier draw am having second thoughts. I think he can turn the tables on El Sugando here. Efficient can win this, but my worry here is the speed in the race. Not sure weather there will be enough, if you believe there is then he wins. Don't touch Marasco. I have backed him the last two starts but I just dont think he is up to this.

Race 9 - Gilgai Stakes
I just can't see Swick getting beaten here. Although I beleive I have thought this in the past. The form around Bon Hoffa has been rather good. Stanzout the danger, was beaten by a good horse last start when getting too far back. Quite keen on Swick here.

Race 9 - Peter Rowland @ Flemington
I think we should be able to leave on a good note here. Roman Squire will be very hard to beat. Back in class and stepping up to the 1400m at Flemington will help. The danger here is Family Guy.

Please post your thoughts on this super meeting.

No pace in the Turnbull Stakes except for Cinque Cento the on-pacer who might even lead all the way at the right pace:-)) Scenic Shot went like a rocket last start [too early] and could be a surprise package. The favorites arn't worth backing. A good race for exotics.

r2 Down Under Boy gets the class right this time and should be too good for these. Sirmione the danger.

r10 Okay Oky gets it's chance here.

It's all of a bit of a guess tomorrow except that the bookies will do well anyway!

jefff_12 5th October 2007 01:41 PM

After looking again I think that Devil Moon can run a big race here. Will be on the pace and with little speed think she will be hard to catch. Was posted wide the trip lasrt start and was still able to blow them away.

r5 Sirmione. Top run last start [ hardly any danger in above r2 :-)) ]

Marasco finally gets the blinkers [he needs somthing] and on the big track, Haradasan will be able to hang-in like there is no tomorrow!

Chuck 5th October 2007 07:28 PM

cinque cento an amazing run last start, looks the goods in the turnbull. zipping and efficient other rough chances

Horse Whisperer 5th October 2007 09:27 PM

What a great days racing its going to be, so glad im going to be at a wedding......

Looking forward to seeing vormista over 1400m, i think thats one of the best of the day.

The turnbull looks a cracker, im gunna get on something at value, Zipping is excellent odds, can take up a forward position, and after it first up run is looking in great form.

Shadoways i think is ready to show some of the form it had last spring, if it cant produce in this race then thats it. LOL said that before....

Roman Squire is going to finish the day nicely and cap off a great winning day, well thats the plan anyway.

Good luck everyone

Horse Whisperer 5th October 2007 09:33 PM

well that sucks, roman squire is scratched

nominated for bendigo 11/10

Matilda 5th October 2007 11:12 PM

My trifecta
Zipping, Efficient, Haradasun, Marasco
If they have Miss Finland in the race would be even a huge cracker.

not included the pre-post fav el segundo any particular reason/s why?

Matilda 5th October 2007 11:29 PM

Aspect him not to perform well at Flemington and jumping from 1600 to 2000 is not his liking although he did well in Cox plate and Yalumba last year but he didnt win. Well that is just my prediction. I expect Zipping to run really well tomorrow.

Might pick Zipping to win and box 2nd and 3rd for an exotic tri. hi hi...

Raw Instinct 6th October 2007 05:56 AM

I think Efficient steps out today and shows why I feel he is an enormous chance in the Cox Plate the only thing that will bring him undone here is either a severe track bias or and extremely slow speed, if he gets an even tempo he will be flying over he top of them. The main Danger IMO is Devil Moon she could control the pace here and if she gets away cheaply then none of them will catch her.

crash 6th October 2007 06:51 AM

Had rain overnight.
Fleminton Sat. DEAD Few showers easing. (Max: 18) Rail: Out 9m (Pen: Ins: 5.1. Out: 5.04. (Pent: 4.96). Dead (4).

Softer ground [and the blinkers] might improve Merascos chances. Kesley reckons the horse is a query over 2000m [didn't manage 1800 well either]. Brings Zipping right into this.

R2 I'll stick with Down Under Boy e/w

r6 Vormister should prove too classy here after her 2nd to Gold Edition. Step up to 1600m should suit and if it does can't see anything beating her. I'll have her x 1,4,8,10,14 for a tri.

r9 With the dead track now and slight drop in class, Monet Rules will be hard to toss here.

With a name like Shag on a Rock in the last, it might be a good omen bet to get out on for a lot of punters after today :-))

crash 6th October 2007 07:59 AM

r6 should have been: 12 x 1,3,4,8,10,14

R9 Monet rules is scr. so I'll bet r10 Okay Orky instead.

maverick1993 6th October 2007 09:09 AM

Race 2,
I'm liking Down Under Boy ,,finished off well last start and looks to crying out for the distance and the track suits..
i also like Shinn on these backmarkers..got 17's last night and i'm happy with that...
Race 3,
Nine Tales,,,8's was impressive last start..i'm not a fan of the breeding but should have won a tough race last start..
should appreciate the big track and the trainer would have him primed for this...
Race 4
I think Red Lord,,,7's is the best of the day..(if these showers stay away) I'm already on so i cant do much about it..
Hes flying this prep in harder races..just has to run up to his last two runs to win this..
The Fuzz should be ready to show something today and a big watch on Black Tom..(I have a ticket on him in the MC)
Race 5,
Red For Lou ,10's doesnt win enough to get excited about but she does look suited here..fantastic run last start ...
the big danger is Sirmione as you should forget his last run...
Race 6,
Vormista should win this and easily....i took the 2.80 yesterday and i'm not sure yet if i've got a price or not yet..
..if they are struggling from the back then Hidden Strings will give a good sight...
Race 7,
I've been following Sleek Chassis,,,6.50 and this is his race..Jesta has to be a risk on the dead and a distance query (rory's jester)
I could be way off the mark but just because a horse can finish off a 1400m race doesnt mean the horse can finish off a 1600m race..
i have this arguement quite regulary with my happy saturday punting friends..I dont think Williams has been riding Sleek very well this prep
and he'll out to make amends..the track suits as does the dead surface..
RAce 8,
I love this race ...a fantastic race to watch but a shocking punting race..to many to close to each other in the ratings,,,,
I'm having a little e/w on Eskimo Queen at the nice odds and then enjoying the spectacle,,..
Race 9,
Honalee and Electric General..both these horses are way overs..Honalee proven stright track performer and in good form,,
(galloped on last start) ..and at the 23's represents nice value,,..Electric 21's has good speed and seems to be a horse that
will like the straight running..

I'm happy with the prices i got yesterday,,,not like me to jump on so many so early but the prices seemed to be way to good
to pass up..

NZ
I like JDAne e/w in the Kelt,,,,box Seachange, Princess Coup and Veloce Bella ,,
Port Macquarie
Or Mr Lord
Belmont
Grasspatch Girl e/w
Adelaide
Ela Ye Mou

Raw Instinct 6th October 2007 03:50 PM

Well been a good day for me thankfully as if not it could well have been the last day on the punt for no reason other than a few things we are looking financially leaving no money to have a punt with this week will just keep me going for another week or so. Now all I need is for Electric General, Stickpin, Swick or Cocinero to win the next race to get a half share of the treble go Electric General ;)

Only disappointing thing was Eficient he was really flat the inside maynot have helped and a slowish pace had a saver on Devil Moon which did worry me I wouldn't be in a hurry to back Efficient in anything on that run but hey you always forgive them one run.

Raw Instinct 6th October 2007 04:14 PM

no way i could have had that thing it has ********ed me off to much in the past you can only forgive them so many times I was worried about that leg and it killed me. still going for anther week anyway.

Raw Instinct 6th October 2007 04:26 PM

even funnier I had shadoways in the treble and took him out for Swick that would be rather ironic if the protest is upheld that would be amazing what a game this is thats why you keep coming back i guess

rabbitz 6th October 2007 06:12 PM

had a shocker in that i had first and third legs of treble with efficient and el segundo in middle leg
had a couple of little returns late and decided to go wide in the last..yes you guessed it ..i backed arbitration On the nose  Paid $49.00 :D

maverick1993 6th October 2007 07:10 PM

Hard day at the office but came away with something in the pocket..

Got Red For lou at 10's nice overs,,,Got 2.80 for Vormista which turned out to be unders...and a nice place divie on Jdane..
3 results from 10 races,,,,bit of struggle..
glad i left the turnball alone...dissappointed with Red Lord (havent seen the replay yet) Sleek Chassis has officially been sacked,,
Funny track today at Flemo,,real hard to get a good form read on some of these races i'd expect...

Liking On A Jeune tomorrow in the Benalla Cup at 6's ,,,actually have a ticket for the MC lol at 61/1 ..you just never know ??
also Anamato at 51/1 for the CC and after today i'm alittle more confident..
not sure about my black tom ticket now :(

hope you all had a good one :)

Thought it was quite a tough day today. Luckly Vormista got home. I cost myself a little though. Was keen on Efficient all week but didnt want to back it at the short price as it had opened up at 11 during the week and I missed it. I was planning on backing Devil Moon. Ended up saying I would back Efficient if it got to 9's. So I hung around the ring and it gets to 9. Only had a saver on Devil Moon as at 16 I thought it was overs. Ended up getting what I wanted though so I can't complain

Apart from that had a tough day.

I'm not too sure what to make of the track. The rail was out 9m so i'm not too sure. The rail was off and not the place to be. I have only seen the replay of the Turnbull once on TV. From what I saw I think almost everything that raced on the inside ended up getting swamped and could not make up ground. There was one that looked to race well though in this part of the track. Zipping was back with Efficient and run on very well on the inside, where Efficient ended up in the last few (althought I think he was ridden upside down).

Take nothing away from the winner here, I am a big fan but I am not too sure what to make of this race.

Any thoughts?

tell me about it mate, had an all up on, only had red lord to run a place for me to collect, but thats racing i guess. shadoways showed some form again which was good to see, when he burst out i thought it was all over. didnt see absolut glams race but happy with the place div.

finished in front for the day so cant complain.

Some very unusual results. A total mystery for serious form students. It really was a day for darts. I've been keeping most of my dosh in my pocket since the flu outbreak and sticking to mostly interest bets. I think I'll keep doing that for the rest of the carnival!

We now know one thing for sure, Marasco can't run 2000m, not even with blinkers and a softer track [couldn't run the 1800m either last time in]. Flemington is the horse's best track too so far.

Horses just weren't running on in the straight even in races with enough speed to set up backmarkers.

New tracks take about a year to settle down but then again training is all over the place and all the horses have had shots which might have had various side-effects etc. etc.

$186,000 Quaddie!

A great day for Bookies mostly.

maverick1993 7th October 2007 03:57 PM

Not usually a bagger of jockeys but what was Nash doing on On A Jeune ?? never had a chance of a miracle inside run and could have tracked Viva or Hoffmeister into the race out wide,,,had heaps of horse under him,,
on track for the Geelong Cup i suppose,,,,

AngryPixie 7th October 2007 05:09 PM

Would all of yesterdays VIC runners have had the first flu shot yet? Could that be a factor in some of the results?

I didn't think it was a bad ride up until they come off the turn. Should of followed Hoff and Satinspin into the race. Don't think it would of beaten the winner though.

I wouldn't think so. Correct me if I am wrong but i believe that the horses are not meant to be worked for a week or two after recieving the shot. But I guess they need to get it at some stage and cannot afford to miss work at any time. Fair point you raise.

If they've anything else planned for the Spring, many of yesterdays horses may not be able to miss a week or two. Better to run a bit flat in the early Spring races than those later this month and into November.

crash 7th October 2007 05:40 PM

All runners had flu shots last Sunday.
