Kicking this thread off with the news that Railway Stakes winner Old Fashion ($702,000 stakes earner) will be flown to Melbourne in time to tackle (first-up) the $400,000 Futurity Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield on March 1.

Old Fashion won a recent barrier trial at Lark Hill in impressive manner.

I'm expecting an improved performance from Miller's Fancy in race 7 at Bunbury today. The pace should be on (with the inclusion of Homesville Lass) and expect Miller's Fancy to be running on well at the end.

Perhaps we may finish 1/2 :smile:

I see race 7 today (Bunbury) also has a 'topweight' system qualifier - Opening Twist.

This horse won the Boulder Cup / Kalgoorlie Cup double back in September 2001.

Hasn't raced since failing in the CB Cox Stakes back in December 2001, but I see did run 2nd in a recent 900m barrier trial at Lark Hill, and has gone well fresh in the past.

Very interesting to see how this stallion goes today and in the future. All the best to his connections.

Thanks El Gordo, you saved my bacon. My normally reliable source was way off the spot yesterday, although Midas Rose did run a reasonable race to finish 4th. Couldn’t come at backing Opening Twist – first-up after a long injury enforced spell, over 1675m and carrying 9kg (61kg) over the limit. Too big a task for just about any horse.

Perth apprentice jockey Steven Parnham will make his Eastern States debut when he takes the mount on Fortune Streak in tomorrow's Riverside Handicap (1600m) at Flemington.

Fortune Streak, trained by Parnham's father Neville, boosted her stake earnings to almost $120,000 by winning last month's La Trice Classic (1800m) at Ascot.

Steven Parnham, 17, began race riding last season and has landed 60 winners.

Fortune Streak won the Burgess Queen Stakes (1400m), then was placed in last season's WA Champion Fillies' Stakes (1600m), Belmont Guineas (1600m) and Belmont Oaks (2000m).

Neville Parnham said yesterday he expected the bay to improve on an unplaced run when she had her first Melbourne start, at Moonee Valley last week.

"She was not suited in last week's race," the trainer said. "She has thrived since."

Her stablemate Irish Pride, who impressed when he finished second in last Saturday's $75,000 JRA Stakes (1100m) at Caulfield, will be ridden by Greg Childs in a Mornington race next Wednesday.

Parnham said his filly Trimagic had improved since being unplaced at her Melbourne debut last Sunday and would start at Caulfield tomorrow week.

Also - Northerly's travelling companion, Heavy Nova, is expected to be prominent when he makes his Melbourne debut in the Burrabil Handicap (1500m) at Sandown on Sunday.

"The horse is adapting well to Victorian conditions," Fred Kersley said. "Patrick Carbery will ride him at Sandown. Walk On Air and Flash Bash are likely to be hard to beat."

I fancy a couple for Ascot tomorrow :-

TASK MASTER - Race 4 No 6 "1 3/4 lengths 6th last start after being slow to begin from barrier 1 and meeting slight interference on a number of occassions. Drawn the outside here and that is a concern but he may just do better on the outside of horses".

WESTERN TYCOON - Race 8 No 6 "1 1/2 lengths 4th last start after being caught wide all the way from barrier 13. Drawn out there again in 10 but does have a change of jockey in P. Harvey. All that is needed is a bit of luck and it will be there at the finish."

Star Perth galloper Old Comrade, who brilliantly won last year's $1.25 million Australian Cup (2000m) at Flemington, has another leg injury and his career looks in jeopardy.

Part-owner Bob Peters said yesterday the gelding, a winner of the Railway Stakes and two Fruit 'N' Veg Stakes at Ascot, damaged a tendon while being prepared for a comeback bid.

Old Comrade has not raced since injuring a tendon when trainer Lindsey Smith took him to Sydney's rich autumn carnival 11 months ago. The five-year-old, a $1.7 million stakes earner in 22 starts for Peters and his wife Sandra, was handled patiently on the comeback trail.

"We were restricting him to slow training and ensuring he worked only on good tracks," Bob Peters said. "But he's gone amiss again.

"After treatment, Old Comrade will have a year's rest. Then veterinarians will assess if he can return to training. At this stage, it seems unlikely he will race again.

We all remember the scenes at the Royal Perth Yacht Club in 1983 after Australia II’s America’s Cup win. Today is the first race of this year’s Final between Switzerland’s Allinghi and Team New Zealand in NZ, some absorbing racing ahead.

Some big fields today should make for some genuine tempo races.

R1 – Open race. Will Super Moss go forward from the wide gate? I’ll back 3 if odds allow, toppie Tango Man, Super Moss and Killadeas. Fore Stay will get a good run and hopefully will be fav. so we can back the others.

R3 – Early Express should ping straight to the lead and lead throughout, Harvey rates them so well in front. Won a Barrier Trial recently. Odds will be too short for a win bet for me so multiples might be the way. Bit of a Ride and Pure Penny for roughie place chances. Unbeaten Mercury’s Halo a good show and handicapper hasn’t missed him either but I’ll risk him.

R5 – Good Welter. Miss Torpago races best in the lead but don’t think Eastern Standard will let her cross so I’ll rule the lass out. 4 Eastern Standard is clear top pick but again odds the problem. I’ll throw in 3 & 7 &1 for place chances.

R6 – Will Vindaloo keep out Kingston Blaze for the lead? Early splits suggest not. Twin Power and Crown Chief up there as well. I’ll back Edition(2kg pull over Vindaloo) and Blinded(best runner-on last start against Comeback Kid). Instantaneous(get a good run back in the field) was given 57kg for R8 and didn’t accept. I’ll risk it here. For those who like Kingston Blaze it can definitely win again, it just may be under the odds.

Lookin through your overview red, seems you missed a few that I like, so let’s confuse everybody :grin:


R1 – I like Magic Dash - top run last start. The horse that beat in on that occasion looks a danger again – Dela Ventosa. Would not be surprised to see Thundelera run a better race at odds.


R3 – I Like Precious Lady, think she has a good chance. Agree both Early Express and Mercury Halo hard to beat. My roughie is Zebedee Springs.

R5 – Expect Eastern Standard to take the sit on Miss Torpago who will feeling the pinch over the last bit. Not as confident as you red, Son Of Vasac has a touch of class, Voltega did beat Eastern Standard last start, although has gone up 1.5kg and Paradiddle has been disappointing lately, and could surprise.


R6 – Agree red, Edition will be awfully hard to beat. Instantaneous was very impressive last start according to a Sandgroper post I read recently. Vindaloo is going great guns – 3 in a row so far. Also She’s A Rose a good chance. A real roughie, with no recent form of note who could surprise is Hello Stranger.

Bit of a review and betting flucs from yesterday’s Ascot races.
Yes Paddy, the more diverse opinion we can dish out the more we’ll know about each race.
R1 – Good win again to Fore Stay, fast finish with the 56kg. Super Moss 3 wide t/o, big improvement from Party Boy gave Bairstow 1st and 3rd. Tango Man not wanted (6/4 9/4).
R2 – Air Pocket (5 9/2) was incredible odds, but often post-race we’re champion tipsters. Odds were helped by the potential improvement in Pretty Smik (15/8 13/8) and support for a couple of 1st starters.
R3 – For those who took the 5/4 it was a case of Early Exit not Express when he couldn’t cross and lead. Winner unbeaten after 4 runs.
R5 – Face Your Fears was a good young horse, hadn’t shown much in the last year or so. Swoopers were suited in this after the pace set by Eastern Standard & Miss Torpago. Son of Vasac(good 2nd) was very firm in the betting 5/2 2 9/4 2.
R6 – Double for Hughes when he settled Blinded worse than midfield then sprinted at the right time, but the odds(2 7/4 2) were short. Of the on-pacers Vindaloo(7 6) just dropped Kingston Blaze on straightening. That was a booming run from Instantaneous, is reliant on pace though.
R8 – Western Tycoon – punters’ nightmare. Been fav. at 7 of it’s 9 starts and saluted only once. Today they snapped up the shorts (7/4 6/4 5/4) at it’s first 1400m run. The thing is that he was wide and some may blackbook it (again).

R1: Triple Shot only up 1kg for strong win this class & course last start. Don's Record although up in class looks promising. Devil's Speed ready to improve.

R2: Joshua's Star not beaten far in a class 4 at Bunbury last start, suited here. Gun Barrel Blue sound run in class 1 at Pinjarra last start, goes well here. Expect improvement from Ron Bon Jungle.


R4: Corporate Diamond strong win at Albany last start. Little Bill has been thereabouts recently. Chicago's Fire should be ready now following three runs back from a spell.

R5: Should be pace on with inclusion of Sulo Warrior, Warning Tune & Toy Salute.

Expecting further improvement from Sir Donald. Warning Tune hard to run down. Satin Special great win last start. Royal Omen for 4th.


R6: Retlaw suited, Flame Above hard to beat. Taxa winner both middle distance starts. Admiral Black unlucky last start. Jev Force also a hope.

All five winners and the tri in the last. Nice one El Gordo. :smile:

Thought I would add a bit more to red's post race review for Saturday.

Keep up the good work red, (and all our other posters) - I'm sure many appreciate the input.

Race 1 - A very good win by Fore Stay, red. Being set for the Pinjarra and Bunbury cups.
Nice improvement by Animagic - would you believe a 9YO originally from Ireland (one for Paddy) who also raced in Hong Kong.

Race 2 - And yes, a very good win by Air Pocket, red. Money for first starter Rubyclass - reared at the start & raced greenly throughout. Stewards trial before racing again.

Race 3 - Pleasantly surprised by Early Express's short odds, I had it rated 3rd. Mercury Halo did a good job but thought Precious Lady a little unlucky - shifted in a bit around the 150m mark. Pure Penny looks an improver. Mercury Halo will next tackle the Challenge Stakes (1400m) on March 1.

Race 4 - We finally saw the real Lulugui with Harvey on top. Also nice runs by Spirit Of Jules, Mogul and Dante's Kalista. Nice overs for Spirit Of Jules and Mogul, both I had well up in the ratings.

Race 5 - Trainer Colin Webster is to spell Eastern Standard, who ran last in this race. Lovely overs for Face Your Fears. Good run by Son Of Vasac. Voltega proved that his previous win over Eastern Standard was no fluke and is back to his best.

Race 6 - Good win by Blinded who continues to improve and will be stepped up to longer races. Instantaneous got too far back early - top run. Also a good run by Twin Power, who is still maintaining his form, and also a good run by Turnez who is yet to find his consistent Brisbane form.


Race 7 - Interesting that Silentium who was a unlucky 2nd to Crimson Sakura last start and met that horse again at similar weights, started around 40/1, whilst Crimson Sakura who finished 5th in this race, started around 9/1 :wink: Good run by Twin City Girl who is about to strike best form. Disappointing runs by Aunt Katie and Miss Belhus. WA Oaks plans for Silentium.


Race 8 - Pleasantly surprised (again) by the short odds on offer for both Star Trekking (apparently a SKY Channel super special) and Western Tycoon. Had neither rated in top 3.

Top run by the winner Orange William, back to his best. Now a winner 2 out of 3 starts, since a long spell. Burrington Coombe improved on his last start. Star Trekking ran up to his best. Bay Of Mine looks to be ready to find form.

the prince tipped the quinella in race 1 at Ascot. El Gordo did well at Mt. Barker on Sunday even after some selections were scratched.

El Gordo, must thank you for the extra double. Took the field in the first leg (race 3 – maiden) with your remaining two selections, and made a nice profit. :wink:

Summer Surprise is racing at Pinjarra tomorrow - race 6 no. 1. As I mentioned in a previous thread, has gone extra well 2nd-up in the past. Bit concerned about the weight she has been asked to carry (56.5kg). Might couple her up with nos. 3,5,9 & 10 in the multiples.

News this morning that Old Spice, the sire of top gallopers including Melbourne Cup winner Rogan Josh and Australian Cup winner Old Comrade, has died at Clairefontaine Stud, near Busselton. He was 22yrs old.

His progeny have earned stakes totalling about $13 million to-date.

Last month's Perth Cup winner Tumeric, a six-year-old by Old Spice, is expected to further boost his sire's national reputation when he tackles the Caulfield and Melbourne cups next season.

Rogan Josh's 1999 Melbourne Cup win gave Old Spice his biggest success as a sire. Old Comrade, sired by the stallion in 1996, won a Railway Stakes and two Fruit 'N' Veg Stakes at Ascot before his Australian Cup triumph at Flemington last year.

Natasha, Old Role, Old Money, Field Officer, Forge On, Spectrum, Old Nick, Old Cobber, Chelsea and Lawmaker have been among other classy gallopers by Old Spice. More than 150 of his progeny are winners.

Eight yearlings by Old Spice are entered in next month's Perth Magic Millions Premier Sale.

At Pinjarra today

R1: A number of first starters with good trial form, so watch for any betting moves. Expect Crystal Clear to be hard to beat. Danzeyo (blinkers added) and Dreaming of Money could be value.

R4: A repeat of his last start effort and Shirazamatazz will be hard to beat. Platinum main danger. Ted’s Spirit next best. Twice could fill a placing at good odds.

R5: Like the topweight here, Bold Endeavour (also qualifies under angel416’s topweight system) Main dangers Prince Georgios and Brave Act. Final Affair might be placed at good odds.

R7: Expect King Lomond to be hard to beat again, shooting for three in a row.
Hoolagain well drawn and well weighted. Pekan Flyer and Blazing Morn could go well fresh.

R8: Expect a big run from Cation first-up. Lady Didalot consistent of late. All Ferrari another with a good first-up record. Two at value for the multiples – Simply Marooned and Sky Storm.

Congratulations BettyBoop, Summer Surprise duly saluted AND you tipped all the multiples – in WA tri paid $159.30 and quartet paid $651.60. Keep em coming!

I too am impressed with this particular thread, not only the quality of tips but also the general information that comes through.On this side of the continent,I am able to get more information as to what is going on in Hong Kong than what I can on WA.
A situation that I find ridiculous as my interest in HK is only passing and my interest in WA racing is financial. Hopefully profitable.

This thread is starting to keep me informed on what is going on over there and I am finding it very informative - great work contributors.

However, I notice that the thread has not been going for all that long and is already into its 3rd page. So, I was wondering if we could perhaps keep this thread to points of interest and discussion of the Perth scene and open new threads for tipping eg

Ascot Saturdays, Ascot Midweek, Pinjarra, Mt Barker, Bunbury etc, etc.

CONTROVERSIAL former leading Perth racehorse trainer Greg Harper's application to start gallopers in Melbourne has been rejected by Racing Victoria's licensing officials.

Harper, disqualified four times by WA Turf Club stewards after being charged with breaches of Australian Racing Rules' drug regulations, completed a world-wide ban last year.

Meantime, talented sprinter Inzaghi is holding top form and will step up in class to tackle tomorrow's $40,000 Cyril Flower Stakes (1200m) at Ascot. The chestnut has won Ascot races in special conditions company at three of his past four starts.

"Inzaghi faces his toughest test," the four-year-old's trainer and part-owner George Stamenkovic said yesterday. "He has graduated from restricted class racing and is now matched against open company horses. It should be a help that he will carry 52kg, after winning with 57kg last Saturday week. I expect him to again run a top race."

Stamenkovic attributes Inzaghi's winning form to personal attention.

"I feed the horse very well and spend a lot of time with him," the trainer said. "He enjoys being taken for walks from his stable."

Quality sprinter Fireband, an impressive last-start winner, is likely to be heavily backed in the Flower Stakes.

"He's doing extra well on beachwork," Fireband's trainer George Daly said yesterday.

The gelding is also aimed for next month's $40,000 Chaff City Classic (1300m) at Pinjarra and the $60,000 Comfort Inn Bunbury Stakes (1400m). The $50,000 Clark Rubber Bonus is on offer for a horse that wins the Flower Stakes, Chaff City Classic and Bunbury Stakes.

Racing, pacing and chasing clubs in WA will share a $1 million bonus payout from the TAB.

Racing Minister Nick Griffiths said yesterday the extra payment resulted from the TAB's outstanding performance in the first half of the 2002-03 season from August to January.

He predicted record distributions to the codes because the TAB was on target to set a new high for WA off-course turnover.

"The TAB has lifted turnover by $39.7 million, or seven per cent, in the first six months of the season, with increases spread through all codes," Mr Griffiths said.

"Betting on thoroughbreds rose by $12.4 million; trotting was up $10.1 million and greyhound turnover rose by $13.3 million.

"The TAB operated on 2860 meetings (44 more than last year) and the total holding was $502.7 million compared with $463 million last season."

WA Turf Club chairman Ted Van Heemst said it was positive news and he was pleased to see the benefits of TAB growth being passed on to the racing industries.

Van Heemst said it was WATC policy to pass on any benefits to participants and stakes would be reviewed soon, as part of an ongoing process.

The WATC would receive $398,000 (72 per cent) of the $1 million bonus and country racing $154,000 (28 per cent).

WA Trotting Association president Garry Scott said a decision on what would be done with trotting's share ($297,000) would be made at the half-yearly budget review in April.

"We know industry participants are doing it hard. It is positive news that we have greatly increased our betting turnover," Scott said.

Greyhounds had an extra 53 meetings, trotting an extra 13 but racing had 22 fewer meetings.

I notice that there is an ex Sydney galloper going around at Bunbury on Sunday.

Formerly trained by Grahame Begg at Randwick, it has been lightly raced with a career tally of 15 starts and rising 7. Obviously has had problems.

I see that the connections have put John Claite in the saddle, having won a couple of trials on him but has not been the jock on race day. Maybe something in that.

It has a win to its credit at Kembla Grange, a reasonably strong provincial course.

Any opinions?

Hi Redcraze - a winner of two trials before a well beaten fav. at Geraldton first-up, did race wide in that race. Since well beaten at Bunbury, casting its off hind plate during running. Down in class, up in distance today, but I'm happy to wait for any improvement before putting my hard-earned on.

Took the hint and coupled up Chiu Chow Warrior with El Gordo's selections - nice tri - $256.

Could have been a shorter divi - the fav Platinum was a huge run after missing the kick clearly.
