FVRatings 2012

Hi Shaun,

I was just looking at your FVRatings 2012 Update program you was kindly enough to share.

Just an observation.

Did you now that the ratings take into account any recent barrier trial so if runners last run was a barrier trial or even last 3 runs was a barrier trial, they end being what the program uses to calculate its rating, so for instance in the class rating the runner gets $0 for last start prize money so ends up ranked last also it might have had a bad barrier trial due to bad weather etc and may had finished many lengths behind the winner so gets a bad fitness rating.

Is there any way to eliminate those runs from calculations?

can you direct me to a specific race with this info so i can run some checks on it.

Shaun 12th March 2012 11:29 AM

Ok i have found a race with this situation and will take a look.

Yer sure.

Canberra CR6
BLACK OPAL STAKES Sunday, 11 March 2012
Distance: 1200M

This will be a challenge, i might have to give some type of average for this type of run.

I only use the last 2 runs so i might be able to move it to the 3rd or 4th run if needed, but i do understand this makes sense to make the changes to not include this info.

Toil 12th March 2012 12:56 PM

Well I'm glad your doing it and not me.

I wouldn't know where to start but if I think of anything that might be helpful, I'll let you know.

I can use the fact the prize money is zero as a set start position to get the other references from.

Wow sounds good, hate to think how long it took you to learn all this excel stuff.

I have only been playing around with excel for like last 12mths and not from reading any books :S had some previous experience with Access but not much.

Always learning things the long way, sometimes it works out better though.

Shaun 12th March 2012 10:15 PM

I find the easiest way to learn is first to know what you need to get done, there are thousands of things excel will do and there are multiple ways to do the same thing.

That's how i started then i just used a combination of Google, Mr Excel message board and Gruss forum to find the answers i needed.

Once i learned the basics then i moved in to ways of making it faster and simpler.

Just about every sheet i have every posted on here has what i have learned in the codes.

Shaun 12th March 2012 10:22 PM

What version of that file did you have because i have rebuilt a new file with new features, this would have to be my worst habit with excel having multiple files using the same ideas, i must have thousands by now.

Toil 13th March 2012 10:02 AM

Ha ha yer Excel will do that to you.

I have the FVRatings 2012 Update one that was uploaded on 2nd February 2012

Toil 13th March 2012 10:55 AM

I can send it to you if you want? I might have some ideas for your program also.

darkydog2002 13th March 2012 12:19 PM

What does FV mean?

Shaun 13th March 2012 02:51 PM

FV - Forum Version because i had to make changes so it worked for other versions of excel but have updated now.

I made the changes to the program last night not exactly the way i would like, but will have to do for now.

I had a look at a couple races and most times there was only 1 barrier trial that would effect things unless you were betting on 2yo races and such but this program works best for better performed horses.

I have set it up if the fitness or the form sections see a barrier trial then for that run they will get rated at the worst possible level, for fitness they will be rated at running 100 days ago, since i can't account on how they were run this is the best option.

For the lengths beaten it will be set at 10.

The main difference is the class factor, if the last run was a trial it will look at the run before that to take the class rating from, if they had 2 trials this will just be to bad.

Maybe down the track i will find a better option.

I have made some changes to this sheet and it should work with all versions of excel, just follow the instructions sheet.

Ok here is the file, i forgot to save a portion before that's why it was wrong.

I made a small update to the program but won't upload a new one i will just tell you what to do.

On the "MainSheet" in cell Y31 replace the formula with this.

=IF($S$16="","",IF(ISNA(VLOOKUP(U31,$U$18:$X$21,4,FALSE)),"",VLOOKUP(U31,$U$18:$X$21,4,FALSE)))
Then click the bottom right corner of the cell and drag it down to Y38

What it does is pick up on the 4th place horse and puts in a zero just so you know the selection on the results page.

Toil 14th March 2012 11:38 AM

Thanks Shaun, that works :)

Shaun 14th March 2012 12:03 PM

As with all my sheets they are a work in progress so if i make any significant changes i will post the sheet on the forum.

Shaun 14th March 2012 01:43 PM

small code update, on Data sheet FD2 replace the formula with this.

=IF(FC2="","",IF(1/FC2*MainSheet!$R$11>100,100,1/FC2*MainSheet!$R$11))

Then copy down, this will put a max price of $100

As seen in Doomben race 2 if you had 8 runners selected the bottom runner was $100 but the 7th selection was over $380, makes no sense with the prices like that but the rating order was correct.
