Best On Breeding
For an excercise thought it would be fun to go through the prepost faves and list the best on breeding and see how they perform.

If I may add my little bit of fun Mr Prince. Based on breeding and 4 race filters. Played with this one a year ago briefly and showed promise though small sample. Picks good dividends. Rating in brackets determined from best rating last 12 months along with race filter + or - points. Initial qualifiers based upon breeding sire/damsire

Mayhap the depths of winter is not the best showground for our bluebloods to display their wares?
|
That's true stugots, but if they can't crack a winter midweek, and the ratings have them favourite, then Spring is beyond them I reckon.
However, credit where it is due, Photon Willie a $750,000 purchase did win at Randwick today, but they've got a very long way to go, to recoup $750,000 in stakes plus an average of $200 a day training fees! |

There you go Cosmos, another angle you contributed which reflects my results as well.
By the way, very nice site, I had a good read. Some great writing! |
I read an interesting report a couple of years ago which examined all horses which had sold for a million or more in Oz yearling sales. I think there were 16 or so and one had won back its purchase price. A couple had won a couple of hundred thousand and the rest had won trifling amounts.
It also showed that the only group which had shown a profit overall were in the $60k - $80k purchase price group. A rich man's ego fest best describes the outlay on most of the top lots. |

Speedy,
You're right on the money! A lot of trainers and big investors have gone broke or nearly given the game away due to hyped purchases. I remember old Bart made some bad decisions, and at one point Gai. Mike Willesee also nearly went belly up. (matters of public record). Generally the owner breeders are the one's that have propped up the industry. And sadly these days that is really the only way not to end up with empty pockets. Gerry Harvey, Inghams, Singo, Darley, Coolmore, Arrowfield, etc etc. If the horse performs, they get the prizemoney and the ongoing stud fees, plus their own progeny. If the horse doesn't, it's usually very well bred, and they can still recoup losses over time at stud. At some time, they'll throw a good enough one. |
Thank you Chrome...much appreciated. Hope you took a look at my Maiden system that is working well...
As far as breeding goes...it depends whether a horse is to be retained for racing or is being sold at the sales. Commercial breeders or those looking to make as much money as they can from the purchase will breed their mare to the hottest sire...never mind whether the mare matches genetically with the sire or not. Some astute breeders have produced champions and/or very good racehorses by matching a lower level sire that genetically reinforces their mare's best strengths genetically and conformationally...then nature takes it's course. |

Sort of my point in a round about way - unlikely that anything with obvious ability would be debuting at this time of year. |
You're right Stugots, I'm sure they do have some nice types under wraps.
Will be interesting to see what is presented. That's one of the exciting parts of the game. |
