was having a discussion at smoko with the boys at work today about our best wins at the punt ,boy are there some books to be written on this subject ? two episodes that stand out in my unspectacular punting life was the day i took one thousand large ones to have $500ew on tawriffic in the melb cup as luck? would have it on cup day at our golf club we have a nine hole comp in the morning and retire to the clubrooms to watch the races on the telly over a few beers.in my group was a man whose knowledge of racing is very sound and when he talks you listen.when i told him my intention of plonking for tawriffic he leant back in his chair and seemingly to me without drawing breath gave me a ten minute diatribe on weights, breeding, class and ability that left me wondering what the hell i was thinking about putting my stash on this 'horse' i had to force myself to have fifty bucks ew this thing at the tab then go back to the clubhouse and watch it win at 33's a lesson i have never forgot.. another memorable night for me was at the geelong trots where i backed the card .every winner ,the betting ring was not strong the bookies would not set you for large amounts but i took home nearly $5000 .makes all those losing days worthwhile.... OK you desparados got any great memories or sob stories on the punt?????????????????/

Tab Hunter 25th September 2003 10:21 PM

Tragic, a couple come to mind. I mentioned in another post about Kayf Tara in the Melbourne Cup who was scratched on the morning of the race. I won't go over it again, but I'm still hurting from that one. Astute judges still recon it would have won by 7 lengths! Duped me 10 big ones!

What about when I was 18, and down to my last $10 at Wentworth Park greys... My favourite dog at the time was "Our Waverly Doll", and it was a piece! I whacked the doe on, and went down to the boxes to see it jump... It was across the line this dog. So they started to load, and my dog was in box 8... And I swear, as the "Big Fella" is my judge, they put the dog in backwards! Backwards!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Well, they jumped, and the dishlicker could here the rabbit, so it decided to back out of the gate after 50 metres had been underway, and still nearly caught the last dog on the post!

Then there was Travel Rev... He was something. I remember one race he broke his front leg on the second turn, and still came second! He was some dog that.... Cheers

was playing cricket up at christensen park South Head against the 18 footers sailing club of double bay years ago. when Nausori beat Big Philou in the Caulfield Cup. the opening bat for the Club had nausori going for $47,000 and was over the line. in those days 1969 it was a lot of dough.
unfortunately it got rolled on protest. we got him out soon after.
a sad story, still remember watching the guy batting.

Anybody remember Razor Sharp winning his 2nd Newmarket. The good news is I had $20 e/w on it at 25/1. At the time I was on $80 a week as an apprentice chef so it was a good win. At the time I also used to back Cummings runners that were first up. He had Foregone Conclusion in the race also at 25/1. I backed it e/w as well, it ran 3rd. The sob story is that I took them to run 1-2 from the field in a Trifecta. FC was on his own in the middle of the track & got the wanders over the last 50m. Jockey M Pay said after the race he should have run a clear 2nd, as it was he got nutted on the line by Cosmic Planet or Ideal planet or some ************ that i wish was on another planet. It was also around 25/1, and the tri from memory paid about $13000.

Ha, well this is my broken heart sob story one I will never foget...........
Tara Express, well months back could of even been the beginning of the year...I hadnt checked out any form any up to date odds, only looked at the newspaper and saw that it was the horse with the biggsest odds...anyway I was waiting for my other half to give me a call to take my bets, he didnt...I missed the race, but had to watch it and she came in at 160 odd dollars to one. And it was all from my gut feeling,,,so anoying, I will never forgive him for that, I could of been over $1000 dollars richer

umrum 26th September 2003 11:35 AM

here'a good story. i was 12 years old or so at the races with my family. i put $1 e/w on gold ruler in perth paying 100/1 and $1 win on some other cat at 50/1. Then i lost my wallet, so my old girl said pick ur best bet and i will put it on for you. so i said gold ruler and thus had a dollar e/w on it. it was the last race and after we went to race day office to see if my wallet had been handed in. What would you know it had and my $1 e/w ticket on gold ruler was still in there. thus i had a total of $2e/w on the bolter. it paid 80/1 and i collected about $200. a lot of money for a lad that age. actually still a lot of money for me.

another one of my favourites was when i was about 14. i went down to the local tab. i was staying with my nanna at the time for the weekend. she didnt bet but i persuaded her to drop me off. i then proceeded to back umrum in his subsequent first G1 toorak handicap win. He paid $43.

sorry i know you probably didnt want my life story but i thought i'd spin a yarn.

cheers

i wonder if the non bettors ever get that gut wrenching feeling when a horse you are on for a motza collect is trying to hold off all challegers or if they have ever experienced the numbing time warp you go through while waiting for the result of a photo finish or the cold sweat of a protest, they dont know what they are missing, then a feeling they will never have the exhileration and sheer joy ,and the heart pumping euphoria of standing in front of a bookmaker as he empties the contents of his bag into your pockets OH GOD I LOVE IT

You might remember a very handy harness horse named My Lightning Blue.

I remember well that I used to back it regularly at the Valley on a Friday Night in the "good ole days"

It usually started favourite or second favourite and was a real money earner for me.

It went to New Zealand to contest a major race and they opened betting on it at the TAB.
I put a gorilla on it and went to bed thinking it was going to be favourite.

Next morning I woke up and listened to a replay on the radio (i had set up to tape the race on 3UZ).

My Lightning Blue saluted and paid around $9.50

To quote a hairloss commercial:

"I was absolutely wrapped"

i love it chrome prince

kenchar 26th September 2003 04:44 PM

Downs_____ Last sat AMEX, had a motza on it
protest called watched head on replay and started counting the money.

Highs_____ Mid to late 80s? backed a horse named JUDGES RULE in a distance race in melb. Had a $1000 at 15/1.
When I put the bet on the bookie said "thanks a lot".I thought smart ********.
They jumped and it went 15 lengths ahead. I nearly tore my ticket up then. Finished up winning by about 5 lengths.
When I picked up $16000 I said to the bookie "thank YOU very much".
THAT was a real buzz.

Cheers

seems like evry 1 was on it yet it was still 20/1

tragic 26th September 2003 05:45 PM

been going ok up north and last run wasn't all that bad take sportsman out of the race and it was a good bet

kenchar 26th September 2003 05:54 PM

Umrum,
First backed him months ago in brisbane at 10/1,missed the start by lengths kept to the rails and won going away. Have followed him ever since and am well in front.
I couldnt get 20/1 but got 30/1 and 4/1 place so he still made me money.

Cheers

Ah yes my sob story here we go i have a couple. Well the first one was on Derby day last year I had an all Upper for $10. Well the first leg was Choisir to win the race which he did only to lose it on protest later on. Did he cause interference yes would the other horses have beaten him I doubt it. My 2nd leg was Hydrometer for a place and he was nosed out by Helenus on the line to pay a couple of dollars for a place. Then I had Bubitano for a win and sure enough that he did paying about $7 and in the final leg I had Delago Brom for a win and yes he did that to can't remember what it paid by that time i was furious after missing out on the biggest pay out of my life at that time.

Next sob story isn't to bad I guess i got a collect on it through a triffecta. Well here we go I had both Bush Padre and Freemason on the top line with those 2 and Grey Song, Maguire, Bedouin and Lazzaz. Ok we got the triffecta for a half which was about $750 here. but the First 4 paid about $50000 off the top of my head. The order of finish was Bush Padre, Freemason, Maguire, Bedouin and Grey Song.

Gotta take this oportunity to tell the tale about the "one that got away", A couple of years ago I was following PPM selectios (sorry Kenschar) anyway one saturday they came up with a clear selection for a horse called "Inspire" (I think it ws at Ipswitch)as well as another selection contending the same race (sorry can't remember the name) my bets were $20 win at the time. At the same time I was following a an old system of mine backing any horse that had won 3 on the trot (for a place)
As I placed my bets I realised that I had 3 in the same race and the DEFINITE thought crossed my mind that I should take all 3 in an all ways trifecta, well, of course I didn't do that or I wouldn't be writing this would I???

The result Inspire @66-1 ($20 win) the other PPM selection 2nd at enormous odds (can't remember the name) and my system horse 3rd , also at enormous odds (sorry can't remember the name as well)

wait for it!!!!! the TRI paid $73,000.

By the way just in case you thought this was a plug for u know who? it wasn't bcoz despite Inspire I still lost backing their selections!!!! iuf anyone wants the details I would be only too pleased to oblige (in the hope that it stops anyone on this forum falling for their bull********)
