According to the West Australian website this morning - "Champion galloper Northerly has miraculously recovered from a serious leg injury which forced his retirement and will resume training in six weeks with a view to racing next year"

Ultrasound scans on Northerly's damaged near fore tendon had shown full healing.

Yes Paddy, Northerly is reported to be on the comeback trail, but any problem along the way, and he'll be back into retirement.

looks like the champ will be back. cant wait. should have seen the crowd go crazy for him at the track before the railway. The people's champion.

As per the press here this morning, will be at least 12 months before Northerly returns to the race track, if at all.

This is the period considered necessary to provide the maximum chance of making a successful comeback.

I don't think I'll be holding my breath.

Fred will take him back to sydney to prove he can win G1's both ways and prove that he is the champ

Reported in this morning's West Australian that Northerly will return to training at Fred Kersley's Canning Vale stable this week.

"When he goes back into full training, vets will regularly scan Northerly's off fore tendon which was injured last July," Kersley said yesterday. "His training will stop immediately if there are any signs of trouble."

"He won't return to racing unless capable of again winning at the highest level in Melbourne carnivals."

Reports are that Northerly is progressing better than expected. Final decision to return to racing should be made by July.

Hey...nice to know that the champ has recovered, but would'nt it be more humane to let him retire, instead of thinking about the fortune his possible last few races could bring?????What do ya think

Yes Paddy, reported over here on the weekend that things were going well. Still a way to go, but if he stands up to it, Northerly will return during this years Melbourne spring carnival.

As much as i would love to see the champ back, this whole situation reminds me of Might and Powers comeback which failed dismally, lets hope it won't be the same for Northerly.

I see youre point but its in horses nature to run and to be a champion like northerly he must love it. No point leaving him out in a paddock. If he doesn't come back 100% kersley wont run him. I dont know how he'll fare against the youngens, reset, starcraft and special harmony but one thing i do know is that he will put in his best effort every time he gets on the track.

Northerly will be completing a light training exercise between races at Pinjarra this afternoon.

Kersley has reiterated that the first sign of any recurrence of the strained tendon would mean the end of the comeback.

Call me sceptical but I don’t think it is going to happen.

Even if he gets to the race track (which I doubt) can't see him regaining is old form.

Odds are unlikely that he returns to his former self but he couldn't be looked after by a better horseman could he?

'Dual Cox Plate winner Northerly had a leisurely workout at Pinjarra at his first visit to a racetrack since suffering a tendon injury in July.

Trainer Fred Kersley said the injury was healing well but it was too soon to tell whether the champion would make a return to the top level and he would not be rushing him.

"It (the injury) is healing pretty much as we would hope," Kersley said on ABC radio.

"But it's an injury that does take its own time and we allow about twelve months and that puts it in the time frame of about July before we think that it would be completely healed.

"But by the look of the injury at the minute and the feel of it, the way the horse is acting, it does look as though it's going pretty well.

"It is good news, but it's important for people to remember it's very early days yet.

"You can always be very hopeful of course but you're certainly not confident about it.

"But we're doing what we hope is the right thing by giving him these light bouts of exercise and periods of rest so that the leg can regain its former strength.

"I've really got to counsel the public not to get too much ahead of the game because we've really got no guarantees about him becoming the racehorse that he was." '

Champion galloper Northerly passed a critical soundness test when galloping impressively at Belmont Park yesterday - and then received a veterinary steward's clearance to resume racing.

Trainer Fred Kersley said the $9.3 million stake-earner and Australian horse of the year in 2002-03, looked ready to launch his comeback by starting in less than three weeks.

Northerly, the winner of two Cox Plates, a Caulfield Cup and two Australian Cups, has been out since he injured a near fore tendon in training more than a year ago.

He is entered for the $3 million Cox Plate (2040m) at Moonee Valley again on October 23.

Kersley has named the Farnley Stakes (1400m), which has a maximum topweight of 60kg on August 28, as Northerly's likely comeback race. But he has not ruled out Saturday week's weight-for-age Goodwood Sprint (1300m).

Love the champ, he was my favourite horse. Never gave up and was a true warrior but I fear he will finish his career chasing tail.
Reset and Starcraft look the new batch and after seeing Starcrafts win live on slipper day I feel he will be the new star of the turf.
Mind you I learnt the hard way in Sydney one day when I said SUNLINE, the mighty mare couldn't win near the end of her career and she reminded me never underestimate a champion. They can do amazing things!! If Northerly does do the impossible and win a 3rd Cox Plate I will be cheering louder than anyone.

Reset won't beat Northerly mug punter - he's at stud.

Well he's already beaten Northerly then because the poor champ has had his old crown jewels snipped.

Yeah, somehow I don't think Reset will be too disappointed that he won't be racing any more.

after winning 9.3 million with northerly does kersley have any other northerlies coming along, i saw one of his race in perth a while back, cant remember the name, won by about 4-6 coming from last, in i think its 2nd or third start. the memory is very vague, wondering if anyone knew the name or what its doing

Covertly is one that raced in Northerly's colour's but was trained by stan Bates. Ran 4th in Karrakatta and won WA sires produce. with Gut Walter now and aiming for the princess series and perhaps 1000 guineas.

Can't see Northerly amongst the nominations for the Goodwood Sprint (1300m) on Sat.

Guess next race will be the Farnley Stakes (1400m) Sat week.
