Hi,
I have recently been going to the horse tracks and dog track and I am still confused on how to read the book that you get. Could anyone tell me an horse racing "language or terminology" and explain a little about how people bet and how to read the book.
I would appreciate it so much thank-you!

Puntz,

I think our friend actually lives in the USA, and I'm not sure that they even have racing radio stations over there. The American racing language is actually VERY different to ours and racebooks and form guides are probably also different. So it might be a little bit tricky for us to explain everything, but I for one would be happy to try.

Yeah, not having a go at you or anything, Puntz. It's just that with the different terminology used in the U.S, sometimes you'd think it was an entirely different sport!

i think a better solution would be to buy some racing books....i am not sure what the best are for US racing but i am sure someone will be able to tell us on here....or maybe a website that has the same type of info....or find a US based punting forum....we will help you as much as we can...but we mainly talk about Aus racing nhere

darkydog2002 28th January 2004 03:44 PM

Andy Beyer is the foremost expert on American racing.
Cheers.

Yeah Puntz, you do need a sense of humour in this game, especially when you have a bad day. I had a shocker today. Geez, some of the stupid betting decisions I made.

Oh well, Live and learn.

For learning American horseracing, There are several good primers, and as already mentioned, Beyer is one of the best. I would go to http://www.DRF.com and read their free offerings and http://www.turfpedia.com/books.html I myself started with a book by Bill Quirin, aptly named "Winning At The Races", then graduated to Beyer and others. The DRF site, aka Daily Racing Form is the tool most US handicappers swear by (or at).

Regards,

Glenn

Glen.I found William Quirins book
WINNING AT THE RACES
COMPUTER DISCOVERIES IN THOROUGHBRED HANDICAPPING a classic for American races. Most of my early speed and on pace ideas originated from Quirins research.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED for this inqirer.
Cheers.

Quirin's research greatly affected my thinking also. Good material for American racing.

Glenn
