i use works data base, outdated i know but old habits die hard, anyway can anyone explin how to apply a query to an excel data sheet, i've clicked everything i can see, so its obviously too easy for me,..... any help appreciated

Not sure if this is what you want, but for a web query:

1. Click "Data" on the top row (next to "tools)
2. Go down to "Import External Data"
3. Click "New Web Query"
4. Type in the website you need the query from
5. Click on the arrow next to the info you want

Hope this is of some help

chuck3000 thanks , but no, my question was much more basic than that. All I want to do is apply a filter to a set of results in the data base. An easy job in works as you just click on tools and then create another query. But I can't figure out how to do the same thing in Excel

Have you tried highlighting the data that you want to filter and then Tools => Filter => Autofilter? Or is that not what you mean?
It only restricts the rows that you want to show but does not affect any totals etc.

Another option is perhaps the VLOOKUP or HLOOKUP functions.

Hi!
I am sorry to butt in, but why go from a database to a spreadsheet?

Lomaca, just to clarify, I have been sent an excel spreadsheet which I have never used b4 (excel) I am trying to apply filters to it but can't figure out how to do it (i.e. limited computer skills)

I only mentioned works to explain that my own data bases are in works and not excel. But the one I am trying to work on is an excel spreadsheet. I was hoping someone can direct me eg. click on tools, then click on filter, etc etc

Oh OK!
I can't give you advice on Excel unfortunately because it
is not a platform suited to serious data analysis but, you may be able to convert this file to a Works database file.
Open your database and go to tools\import and when the files selection comes up select Excel files or .xls.
Only problem is that the version of Excel can be more recent than your Works database, in which case it will come up with a message "Unrecognized something or other". I am using Access 97 and 2003 and programming in C++ and Visual Basic. If the file is very important to you, ask the sender to send it in a comma delimited text file which you can import into your database.
Alternately if you wish you can send it to me and I convert it into a format you can use.

Partypooper,

How about my filter tutorial?:

http://www.polarhome.com:713/~racensus/autofilter.html

It is designed specifically for excel spreadsheets.

If you want further help, send me the sheet and I'll show you an example.

Chrome Prince,

That tutorial was absolute quality! My hat goes off to you. Thank you for posting that.

You probably don't need this now but I think you can export from excel to a comma delimited file.
