Tassie Tote Ratings

I asked Tassie tote how they arrived at their ratings. This was their reply....

In regards to your question about the THOROUGH Form Interactive form
guide, the ratings are based off the class and time of the race. 20
points of rating equals one full length, so in your example where the
difference is 5 points (545 - 540), then they would finish approximately
one head apart.

Syllabus23 - How do they perform?

syllabus23 18th January 2005 11:11 AM

In my opinion this is the best free form guide available online.Career performance and ratings in a drop down format.Easy to follow and great for form students.Lot's of valuable information...

Lolol of course that wasn't the question.

The value in their ratings is that you are seeing a horse's career ratings on one page. They dont rate the current race,,just past performances,so you are left to decide your own base rating.I like it,, but these things tend to be a matter of individual preference.

Good luck,, good punting...

Well, I'm trialling a ratings method at the moment and yesterday I used both the Tas Tab ratings and Ozeform ratings to do a comparison.

I rated 7 races, although the two at Murwullimbah were abandoned. In the other 5 races, between the two sets of ratings, I found the winner of all of them in the top or equal top rated horses. Using Ozeform, I had the three shorter priced winners rated on top whereas the Tas ratings had them 2nd, 3rd or 4th. However, using the Tas ratings, I had Swan Hill 5-10 Mer Bebe rated on top and it paid $16 for the win. I also had Swan Hill 7-7 Most Handsome equal top rated and it paid $12. In Mer Bebe's race, Ozeform had Number 3 rated on top. It finished 3rd and an any 2 bet on those two horses paid $156. Very nice!

Importantly, the Tas tab ratings rate EVERY race, unlike Ozeform. The race that Most Handsome won last start which had it up the top was not even rated on Ozeform. Very frustrating to see a figure of 0.0 next to quite a few country races. Also, it's MUCH slower using Ozeform to get the ratings.

One thing that found them both out however was Lookout in the Moruya Cup. It had won at Canterbury on Friday, and neither site had updated the form and rating for that run. So I had to make a judgement myself on it's rating for that run. Personally, I thought it was a pretty good thing in the race, despite the extra 2.5kgs hcp it received.

Shaun 18th January 2005 11:22 AM

Sportz....list the races you rated i would like to give then a run via my ratings to see what come up with......i like the links that give information for that particular form...this very useful to see how the horse has done at the distance and stuff

syllabus23 18th January 2005 11:54 AM

Just have a quick peek at Jazzark's form in Rocky today.

The poor darned horse has had 22 runs this preparation. It probably pulls a milk cart in it's spare time and takes the kids to school......

Sportz 18th January 2005 12:04 PM

Here they are Shaun. Sorry, but I actually deleted the prices I had assessed for each horse and I don't feel like working them out again.

As I said, with the Moruya Cup, I actually had to make my own assessment of Lookout's last run, but I think it was probably fairly close to the ratings that the horse would have been given by Ozeform and Tas Tab.

VERY SLACK.

Dates of last race ran are incorrect.
Very slack on their part but not the only site that does it.
Whatever happened to customer service.?
cheers,

Yeah, I actually only rated that race because I was keen on Roxbury Hall and I wanted to see if it would come out on top of the ratings.

brave chief 18th January 2005 06:00 PM

Have you noticed the jockey stats too? Click on a rider and you get his rides for the last 3 months.

Ozeform is painfully slow, and you also get timed out after a few minutes. Very annoying. Also typing in a horses name is VERY tedious. Add to that the Ozeform db basicly shuts down on Tues and Wednesdays I've noticed. Tassy Tote form is lenghths ahead as far as convenience is concerned.

At first glance the ratings at least look comparable to Ozeform (which i've found to be quite accurate). There looks to be a direct correllation evident.

I also like the fact that the ratings are measured in Lengths, as opposed to KG's. This is very convenient if you DON'T believe that 1 len = 1.5 kg's, like me.

Sportz 18th January 2005 06:37 PM

Well, what do you think it IS then?

Sportz 18th January 2005 06:40 PM

I've been using them just as if they were weight ratings. In other words a rating of 625 = 62.5 kgs. This is probably wrong then. I'll have to experiment a bit more with them.

brave chief 18th January 2005 08:30 PM

roughly, i use the standard 1 len = 2.63kg.

Shaun 19th January 2005 11:26 AM

i WAS LOOKING FOR THERATINGS ON TASSIE TOTE BIT CAN'T FIND THEM....CAN YOU TELL ME WHERE THEY ARE

Sportz 19th January 2005 11:46 AM

That's if you want all of the horse's runs. If you simply want to look at the ratings for the last 3 starts, you can get them here:

http://www.tastab.com.au/racebet/fo...des/super_form/

Shaun 19th January 2005 12:06 PM

So the ratings you posted yesterday Sportz...did you work them out or were they on the site

Sportz 19th January 2005 12:38 PM

I worked them out, using the past ratings in the horse's form. They don't have ratings for upcoming races. Not that I know of anyway.

Shaun 19th January 2005 12:55 PM

oh ok mate np....was just going to compare to mine...made a few changes last night....i still have trouble including a class factor in mine but think i have it right this time....still tweaking

Sportz 19th January 2005 01:01 PM

Yeah, I'm still experimenting with them, and while I'm doing that, I'm not really outlaying much money on these horses. Just having a few Any 2 bets and a dollar or two on the top selections when they are good value like Mer Bebe the other day.

Sportz 19th January 2005 01:17 PM

One of the things I'm finding beneficial about doing ratings is sorting out the best races to bet on. Because I don't want to rate more than 2 or 3 races at any meeting, it means I have to decide which races are the best ones to rate. I'm finding that I'm doing pretty well in sorting out the good betting races from the bad ones.

Sportz 19th January 2005 02:31 PM

Wow, I could have had the first 4 on R5 in Melbourne. This is how I worked out the ratings using the Tas Tab website ratings:

08 PHANTOM THIEF 61.5 $3.45
04 MY VISION SPLENDID 60.5 $4.90
11 ROY'S GIFT 59.5 $6.90
01 SIR CLIVE 59.0 $7.80

02 MYSTIC MORSE 58.5 $9.05
03 FEN PRINCE 57.5 $12.30

Shaun 19th January 2005 03:26 PM

You using weight ratings sports....i had 1st/3rd/4th

xptdriver 19th January 2005 04:03 PM

Gday All

this is a very interesting thread.. I rate nearly every race evry day... I have had a play with the TAssie ratings and up to race 7 there have been a phenomenal (sic) 5 out of 7 horses rated on top as the winner .. The other 2 had the horses rated in the first 4.. Lately I havent been able to rate an on top winner in melbourne for love or money so maybe this is helpful tool

The last race at 5.15 goes something like this (Have I jinxxed it or what?)

8 SANDOWN HILLSIDE
3000 Good 1MW-LY HCP $22000
1 $2.7 DOMINEER PRINCE
2 $3.6 PHAYES TIP
9 $4.9 OUR DRAWN
4 $8.5 CARDASH
3 $11.4 GLEFTI
6 $15.1 MOLLO MOLLO

Now bound to faill :)

My normal ratings are as follows:

Race 8 5:15 PM Castletown Handicap Rst 1 Met Win-LY
2 $2.6 Phayes Tip
1 $4.7 Domineer Prince
3 $6.3 Glefti
6 $8.2 Mollo Mollo
4 $11.0 Cardash
8 $11.0 Spicy Red

Sportz 19th January 2005 04:06 PM

Yeah, although those Tas Tab ratings are apparently based on lengths, not kilos, I've still found that using them as weight ratings works out okay. For example, a rating of 565 on that website I just convert to 56.5 kgs. They've gone okay so far but I still need to study them a bit more.

Sportz 19th January 2005 04:09 PM

XPT, could you please possibly list the top 4 rated horses in each of the first 7 races as you've worked them out?

Good old 'last race' Damien Oliver. :)

DR RON 19th January 2005 06:43 PM

So Sportz, which run do you use as the base rating, last start, last run at distance, best run at distance, best run in current preparation???

Sportz 19th January 2005 08:23 PM

Well, I'm trying to keep it as simple as possible and at the moment, I'm simply taking an average of the horse's last run and the horse's highest rating recent run. If neither of those runs is comparable with today's race, then I may go back further into the horse's form, but as a rule, I usually try to concentrate mainly on a horse's last 3 starts if I can. Of course, when horses are first-up or second-up, well that's more of a problem.

brave chief 19th January 2005 09:06 PM

It's hard to say Ron. Personally, i dont like to automate the base rating too much. I look at the 'good' ratings a horse does say in its last 4/5 runs. Then i look for a few things:

Can a horse be expecetd to improve at all (lightly raced, improving ratings)? Has it done a peak performance and now should revert to its old lesser form? Is a horse rating well below its best on going/distances that should suit? Has a dry tracker been hitting wet tracks recently?

That sort of stuff.

Sportz 19th January 2005 09:11 PM

These were the races I looked at today:

SAND R5
08 PHANTOM THIEF 61.5 $3.45
04 MY VISION SPLENDID 60.5 $4.90
11 ROY'S GIFT 59.5 $6.90

06 KIR ROYALE 53.0 $11.40
10 MAMBO DANCER 53.0 $11.40
09 CEE WAY 52.5 $13.70

Not bad results as far as finding the winners, and a few good multiples as well. Some strange ones though with Royal Dreamer and Vic By The Jug rated so short and Kane Smytzer so long. That was one occasion when my method of concentrating on recent runs didn't work well. Have to keep experimenting with them until I find the right balance.

Duritz 19th January 2005 11:19 PM

THERE IS NO HARD AND FAST LADS!!!!

Sportz you can't concentrate on recent form only, and you can't concentrate on old form only. You can't restrict to this distance, nor this state of the track. You can't take last start as gospel, nor can you ignore it. You can't average all runs, nor can you place too much emphasis on one only. To blandly paraphrase Euripides - "the best way is the middle way."

There is no easy answer. Know the horse, know what it can do on it's ratings, watch it run, see how it's going now, estimate given tomorrow's circumstances what it will do tomorrow. Then, price the race, bet the overs.

When you lose (this is VERY important) look back and work out why you under assessed it. When you win, enjoy the satisfaction that comes from being right and winning money out of it.

This will always be the best way.

Duritz.

Duritz 19th January 2005 11:23 PM

Sorry forgot to explain why I said all that - Kane Smytzer was an obvious example of a horse with problems who had lengths of ability on that field. Assuming that it's recent bad form (ie two runs so far this prep, only two last prep) were indicative of it's TOTAL ability is like writing off Michael Jordan when he has a bad run.

(OK OK that's an exaggeration, but to quote someone else (can't remember who this time, and yes I am aware that I am using a second set of brackets inside the first right now (and I don't care (and why should I (I shouldn't)))) "Paint the truth in blood.")

Duritz.

KennyVictor 20th January 2005 06:36 AM

You talk (write) a lot of sense Duritz but your wanton use of brackets shocks me to the core. I overuse brackets (sometimes normal ({othertimes curly [occasionally square]****) myself, but can't condone it in others. If you hadn't balanced them (5 left, 5 right) I would have reccomended you be struck from the forum.
