FEBRUARY TIPPING COMP (Feb26)

COMPETITION RULES:
$150 to bet with each week. $100 in win/each way bets, a $30 trifecta and a $20 all-up bet. Of course, all tips to be posted prior to the jump time of your first race. In the case of scratchings, it would be desirable if you could make changes, especially for the trifecta part of the comp. If that's not possible however, your scratched horses will simply be taken out and that money refunded.

WIN / EACH-WAY BETTING: ($100)
No restriction at all on the number of selections per race or the amount bet on any race, as long as your bets add up to $100. However, you can only bet the following amounts:
$5 win, $10 win, $20 win, $30 win, $40 win, $50 win
$5 e-w, $10 e-w, $15 e-w, $20 e-w, $25 e-w

TRIFECTA BETTING: ($30)
Everyone to pick out one trifecta each week. It can be on any race. It will be a 1/2 unit trifecta and there are 4 options you can choose:
Option 1: A 5 horse 'box' trifecta (If any 3 of your 5 horses finish in the placings in any order, you win)
Option 2: A 3/6/6 trifecta (3 horses to win, and those 3 plus another 3 for the 2nd and 3rd placings)
Option 3: A 2/7/7 trifecta (2 horses to win, and those 2 plus another 5 for the 2nd and 3rd placings)
Option 4: A Roving Banker with 5 others (Your 'banker' MUST finish 1st, 2nd or 3rd, and any 2 of the other 5 to fill the other placings)
Please set out very clearly which option you want to use and which horses you want for 1st, 2nd and 3rd.

ALL-UP BETTING: ($20)
Everyone to pick out a $20 all-up bet at one of the venues each week.
You can have 2, 3 or 4 races and you are allowed to pick each selection for a win OR for a place.
Of course, normal place betting rules apply. If your horse runs 3rd in a field of 7 and there's no 3rd div, then that's counted as a loss. Also, please specify if you want any or all of your selections for a place, because if not, I'll just assume you're picking them to win.

Thinking of cutting back and having a MUCH simpler version of the tipping comp after this week. As Chuck suggested, with the Group 1 comp, the Ratings challenge and the Lays of the day running at the same time, it is just a bit too much. And it's a fair bit of work for me too.

kiwi 24th February 2005 05:36 PM

Thanks for what you are doing here Sportz, it is appreciated.

Have you tried the Daily Challange on Racing and Sports. It wiould give you an opportunity to partipate without also doing all the work.

I enter as Pembroke and find it great for testing my neural settings.

Kiwi

Sportz 24th February 2005 06:00 PM

Yeah, I've played that a few times and gone okay, but most of the time I forget until there's already been a few races run and it's too late.

maverick1993 24th February 2005 06:07 PM

You could share the load Sportz....i don't mind doing the totals after the Sat races here and there and there's plenty of us here who could volunteer and help out..
You do a great job...and filling in for Patty who doesnt seem to be around anymore is more than appreciated..

kiwi 24th February 2005 06:15 PM

My main prob is getting the track conditions and scratchings.

We are two hours ahead ( three during daylight saving) of Auzzie in NZ and we are well into the working day by the time they are posted.Depending on my shift i can get them or have to enter the previous day.

Hope you can participate more as your selections are well thought out and would set a high standard of competition.

It is quite difficult having to pick the winner in one when there are sometimes two or three good chances but it sharpens up your skills.

KIwi

Sportz 24th February 2005 06:19 PM

No, it's alright Mav. I'll manage. :)

It's just that I think it's probably a good idea if we go back to the simple version of straight forward Win betting instead of the All-ups and Trifectas. It was certainly good for an experiment, but keeping it to Win betting makes it much easier for all.

Yeah, I hardly ever back just one horse in a race. Believe it or not, I got a $124 winner today. Never would have even considered putting it on if I had restricted myself to just one (or two) horses in the race.

kiwi 24th February 2005 06:30 PM

Gotcha.Agree, stick to the win bets.

A question, what reasoning did you use to make Pleasure Ground a top rated bet at Rosehill?

Kiwi

Sportz 24th February 2005 06:56 PM

Can't take all the credit for that one. There are some Trackwork horses to follow that I get emailed to me and I blackbook them. It was one of them. I looked at the form and thought it was definitely up to the standard. Also it had one first-up run for one win, so that's why I had it on top. Nice result. Did you back it?

kiwi 24th February 2005 07:38 PM

No mate, was at work and only saw it later.Had a couple of collects off Wayne Hokai today, i tend to follow him.Another jockey worth watching is Steve Arnold.

What made you back Brolene.I used to follow double zeros but you need a good bank.I find replacement jockeys can be rewarding as well but there can be substantial gaps between collects

Sportz 24th February 2005 08:28 PM

Well, this probably sounds absolutely stupid but I get a few nice collects out of it, so here goes.

I tend to use this only on big fields (say 14+) or sometimes on the last race of the day (minimum 10 runners). If I have two horses picked out in the race and one of them is starting from either the inside or outside barrier, then I also have a small each-way bet on the horse starting from the other barrier.

For example, in that race today, my top two picks were clearly numbers 9 & 5. Well, number 9 was starting from barrier 1, so I also put a small bet on number 17 which was starting from the outside barrier. That was the only reason I backed it. It's form was absolutely awful. These were the races I used this method on today:

Mackay R8
Top pick: 10 Blue Racer UNP
2nd pick: 2 Captain Kilometre (outside) WON $9.70
Roughie: 12 Special Diam (inside) UNP

Hawkesbury R6
Top pick: 5 Come In Spanner Won $2.30
2nd pick: 8 Mersey Beat (inside) PLA
Roughie: 15 Jonnywoo (outside) UNP

Bendigo R6
Top pick: 9 Maple Spirit (inside) PLA
2nd pick: 5 Hotspurs PLA
Roughie: 17 Brolene (outside) WON $124.30

Geraldton R7
Top pick: 1 Chief O'Hara UNP
2nd pick: 4 Corporate Georgina (outside) UNP
Roughie: 3 Clairside (inside) UNP

By the way, as you can see, I could have had the trifecta in Brolene's race but didn't put one on. I took a quinella instead. Quinella paid a nice $316 but the trifecta was $3870!!!

kiwi 25th February 2005 06:30 AM

Thanks Sportz.

I also followed widest barriers regardless of form for a few weeks.

My theory was that by the time it came to the last two races the inside ground had become impacted and rock hard and the wider ground was fresher and easier on the horse. It works, but the run of outs put me off and i started on another plan.

Your method is more targeted and i will give it a go.

Another idea i have is based on horses running together as in a herd.Outside barrier would group with the inside as often the widest horse will compete with the ace draw for the front running position. The horse you fancied was the favourite which would probably also be running handy. It was also the 100 rated horse in theory it had previously done something special.

The above horses would naturally group together and exclude the rest of the field and therein lies the trifecta.

Other horses i throw into the herd group are the topweight and those drawn either side of the horse carrying most of the above factors.

Ah yes, that's another thing I forgot. Almost always, one of my selections is the highest unitab rating in the race.

Anyway, that's enough of my silly system.

kiwi 25th February 2005 07:18 AM

No mate your system is not silly.

Bet with the public elects you will eventually lose.

Innovation and new ideas are the key to winning. Some of my strangest ideas have paid best. These systems go good for a while then fade. The key is to notice the dying throes of a system and try a new one.

It is also appears a dead system can revive and be viable again.I check old ideas to try and pick when this happens.Your inside outside plan has encouraged me to go back to something i had given up on.

Sorry, but I can't accept this one. The race was run 15 minutes before you put your tips in. You probably didn't even realise that, but in all fairness I can't accept it. Can you find another selection please?
