2 Step Authentification?

I'd been warned about the risk of having my Betfair account hacked#, and in this day and age, why doesn't that surprise? It was suggested I upgrade to 2 step authentification#. "What's that?", I thought.

I googled it and basically, providing you have a mobile phone, you have an app that is continually changing a 6 number code. Every time you log in to Betfair, be it individually or using a bot, you add the current 6 numbers displayed on the app after your password.

I rang the boys in TAS, and at first they were bereft of any idea about what I was talking about. Finally got through to someone who did and the process isn't quite as simple to setup as I don't have a UK IP address. However they managed to sort it and I feel a lot happier.

#..Special thanks to UB as well :)

Thanks for this bit of info. :)

We use something similar at work, 8 digit number that refreshes every 60 seconds on our phones that has to be used within that 60 second timeframe to log in along with username and password otherwise you don't get in.

Also there is an australian guy on instagram who trades on betfair, particularly on major sporting events and claims to make big money. Put a video up yesterday showing his account balance being over $9 million dollars. Can post his instagram handle here for those of you with instagram accounts that want to have a look - seemed kinda bogus to me but maybe i'm just overly skeptical.

Paypal and some banks use a random number method,
BF ought to consider this as an option if they have not yet done so.

What is it?
The Security Key displays a random, six-digit code. Log in to your PayPal or eBay account by entering the code displayed along with your account password. The Security Key is available in 2 versions:
Security Key card: This is an electronic device that creates a unique security code instantly at the press of a button. It is the size of a credit card.

interesting concept, we have come a full circle. At the beginning the electronic transfer of money was hailed as height of security and convenience eliminating dangers of cash transport and so on. Now it has come to a point where such transgressions have taken on a global nature and some hacker in some corner of the world can empty your account without much chance of ever being brought to account of his actions.

The answer is multiple steps of authentication, password juggling and changing every few days external key generators and other possible defense strategies.

Not so convenient or secure anymore.

Hi evajb, can you post his handle? Always interested in what people are making or claiming to make on Betfair.

@thepropunter

I think he also just started an investment service for others to gain access to his punting/trading team - claimed to make 9% ROI in week 1. Anyhow take a look I just follow the guy for interests sake, could all be fake for all I know but he loves throwing pictures up of money and cars haha.

Funny how yesterday I made a positive step towards upgrading security of the cash in my Betfair account. That prompted me to look at bolstering all my password security for all the sites I use. So I research the topic Password Vaults, as in apps that generate, hold and allegedly protect all your passwords with encryption. I check all the reviews out and settle on one product. My thought bubble went along the lines of, "Onya, you're doing the right thing here, and it's about time!"

I was just about to commit and googled the product again. "Whaaat!"... Security Notice 11 hrs ago: The company's servers have just been hacked
This company's has 76 million users and their email addresses and encrypted passwords were compromised in a breach.

Where does this leave any of us? These people specialize in encryption and look what happens. New thought bubble, "How safe is my money, no matter where it's parked?"

I just think the best way to safeguard yourself is use passwords that contain numbers, uppercase, lowercase and have nothing to do with your name or family etc.

Use different variations of the same password across different sites etc and never store them on your computer in a word doc etc - write them down if you need to store somewhere.

Avoid 'dodgy' websites at all costs and in particular dodgy emails with dodgy links - I know that's a pretty generic statement but 95% of dodgy emails are pretty obvious and virtually no respectable website/company asks for your username or password details via email.

If you abide by just those few simple things AND only use your credit card on 100% respectable/known websites where required and you can't use paypal etc then you should be pretty darn secure. That's the general rule of thumb i've always followed and never lost money touch wood, astounds me the number of people who manage to lose money via dodgy emails etc.
