One of the best horses I have ever seen. Did all the work to cart the rest into the race and still too good.

You're preaching to the converted here, old son. The question is .."Do we back him again on the 1st Tuesday in November, with 60kg on his back?". ...and the answer is "Blood Oath".

Rain Lover’s not kidding about preaching to the converted Daynali

Just one more opinion, guys (and Betty). Put your money on Northerly in set weights races (eg. Cox plate) or WFA. Forget the handicaps - he can't concede too much weight to smart horses and still win - just ask Old Comrade.

I hope Northerly does start in the MC, means I’ll get better prices for the real chances!

that is damn cruel if you start northerly in the MC. the only thing that can stop a champion is weight... you could damage the horses spirits which could end northerly's career.

BettyBoop 27th October 2002 04:39 PM

I hope Northerly's connections consider the longer term and don't get carried away with the moment. No way has he been trained for the Melbourne Cup, which will be a far different kettle of fish to his recent WFA wins & his brilliant Caulfield Cup win.

Three runs in a matter of three weeks, stepping up a further 800m on his CC win & asked to carry a further 2kg, against a field where most have been set & trained specifically for this one race.

Way too much of a risk, if you ask me. Don't do it Fred !

I agree. He has nothing left to prove, winning Australia's two best races in consecutive weeks. Why run him a race, which doesn't really prove anything about horses except they can plod 2 miles. All good races are from 2000m - 2500m, and in this one he'll have to carry the grandstand. Kerskey was right when he said " I don't want to break the flag pole."

Rain Lover 28th October 2002 10:57 AM

Thanks Paddy for pulling out those embarassing remarks about Northerly's ability in handicaps. I was looking back at last season's efforts with little idea of how he would perform in this seasons' races. But I was not silly enough to keep my money off him.
Kersley definitely won't put Northerly at any risk at all. The way the horse backed up from 2400 to 2040 in 7 days, the way he finished full of running in the Caulfield Cup and the fact that there's a 10 day gap between the Plate and the Melb. Cup lead me to hope that Fred will start him.

Dear mates:
What champion horses for ,its RACING.How many
people doubt Northely before the Cox and Caulifield cup with its weight and distances
now hes make history and won both of these
races, although weight is a big concern but
champion horses should able to overcome this
problem , i strongly think he will make histoy again to win the Melbourne Cup and be
the next king of the turf after Sunline.
Did any one notice Northely is 7 years of
age by this time next year ,he might not as
good as he is this time next year eg Sunline
once the age catches up then is over.
Fred should let him start in the cup while
Northely is at its highest peak at the moment.
cheers!
