New member intro
Hey all, I've been reading posts on here for a couple of months and thought it was about time I chimed in and said g,day, I'm very new to horse racing and have a lot to learn about the sport, At the moment i'm mainly laying in the National hunt Hncp hurdles and chase, maidens, no novice or flats, basically because all of the reading i've done focus on these races and while it differs from venue to venue due to the nature of these races you find some good fav laying opportunities as they have quite a low strike rate, It seems like a good place to start anyway while I learn more about the sport here.
see you in the forums Matt |
Hi there, Matt. I take it you're in UK or betting there as jumps races are about to be axed here. I remember some great heroics from some wonderfully courageous horses over the jumps. Crisp and Lots Of Time were great champions and a perrenial favourite of mine was a slow old thing called Prince Lindal who only began to wind up after about 4500m. An awful memory I have is of a great Kiwi jumper called Bell Flight who was 200 metres in front coming down the straight at Flemington in a Grand National when he fell. I can still hear John Russell's call of that sad event ringing in my ears. The horse was shockingly injured and had to be destroyed. Another tragic defeat (although I believe the horsewasn't injured) was in the Aintree Grand National of 1956 when Devon Loch was miles in front only to miss his stride and sprawl on the turf yards from the post. You can view that one on Youtube, the whole 6 + minutes. Dick Francis, the later to be literary character, was the rider.
I too followed the jumps closely last season and there was a real pattern there in the races around Victoria's western districts. Invariably an old trier called My Big Fat Greek Horse would lead and just about win but get run down in the last 200 metres or so. I think I broke about square on them but it isn't all about money, is it? For those who think it is, I suggest you go to Youtube and watch a clip by Carl Sagan called Pale Blue Dot. Anyway, welcome and good luck. |
Hi Percentum, i'm in oz, just betting on the UK jumps. I found a good old article in the age on bell flight, horrible tragedy, and everyone knew he was gone when he got up.
I was introduced to these races a few months ago and am already very fond of them, studying the form on racing post has become a great pastime it's a handy site and some of their features like spotlight make the job a bit easier for people like myself. Thank you for your welcome and i'll be sure to check out those you tubes. Thanks Matt. |
