Calculating race ratings

Is the a simple method for working out ratings.

I use the class of the race as a basis for my ratings. I'm sure if that's the correct way.

No, there is no simple ACCURATE way to work out ratings.
It's a very complicated process, you have horses first up, rising in class, dropping in class hitting peak or declining form, distance, track condition etc etc.
It is the importance of each factor you assign a score to, that will determine success or otherwise.

Class is not a bad starting point at all, but there are so many other factors.
