One for the Excel Gurus

Gday Excel Gurus

just a quick q... why is it if I direct copy from some web pages into excel the page copied shows in excel all formatted and nice, but sometimes the numbers in the cloumns do not act like numbers.. you cant add them or do any calculations with them... any ideas..?

Hi xptdriver,

It depends on how excel reads the data, it is because excel has interpreted the number as text rather than number. You may notice a little green arrow in the bottom left hand corner of each cell, if you click on it you can "convert to number".

You can select the whole column and convert it to number format.

Gday Chrome..

thanks for the reply, I know that lil green thingie... but it isn't there.. even when I format the cell from general to number it's still the same the ************ of a thing....

try - copy - paste - into a new workbook already formatted to number then from there copy - paste special - values - into your existing workbook, may help, however it probably has more to do with the web page formatting, something there that excel does not like
