Spread Betting

I was searching the different sportsbooks that I have accounts with and most of them have a line on just about every sport.

My question is that I don't understand spread betting. Can someone please explain -- just the basics for now.

There was one I found.

St Kilda -11 $1.90
Fremantle +11 $2.00 and Fremantle lost by a point.

There are a few even money lines available.

Benny,
If you had backed Fremantle at +11 , you WIN 10 units.
If you basked St Kilda -11 , you lose 10 units.

I actually participated in this match on spread betting with Sports Acumen.
I had $100 per point on Fremantle at +10 so picked up $900 profit.

The spread betting books usually do not offer a price but just a line.
For example, St Kilda -14, Fremantle +10.

My advice on this form of betting is to try and back the outsider if you think they can beat the spread. backing favourites and giving away start is treacherous. On many occasions last year, the outsider won the game comfortably without needing the start.

I thought that backing a team to cover the spread meant that after that numerical handicap had been taken into account at full time if your selection was ahead you win.

The dividend is normally just under $2 (due to the bookies taking their cut) and if after the handicap there is a draw your stake is returned

Eg. Hawthorn +6 ($1.90)

If Hawthorn win or lose by less than 6 you win! If Hawthorn lose by 6 your bet is refunded. If Hawks lose by more than 6 then you lose.
