Any advice on trifecta betting.

Hi TAM - Welcome.

One good method that I have used is to use my selection, providing it is at good odds, as a roving banker in the trifecta.(you collect as long as your selection runs a place).
It costs a fair bit more than your normal trifecta but is very effective where you pick a horse at 10/1 or better and the race is very open. You can collect some big dividends especially when an outsider wins and your selection runs second.

EI - thanks vm your prompt response - does this mean I should add your selection - ie box four horses rather than the three?
(told you I was an amateur)...

Tam if you have a selection yourself, say you like horse (5) for example you bet it this way:

5-Field-Field
Field-5-Field
Field-Field-5

I know it's expensive, but your selection should be 10/1 or better and you must be confident it can run a place.
I have seen huge results especially over the Spring Carnival....and on wet tracks in Winter!

Just an idea, don't take this as gospel as you may not have the bank to withstand a long series of outs.

Just a small twist on Equine Investor's idea.

When you have narrowed your selections down to say 4 runners and you are going to box them, if you are absolutely sure on the credentials of one of them, you could rove it through the other three and it would help save some money.

Murphy's law states that now and then the other three not roving will score though and you wonder why you did it!

Example.

Box 4 at 50c = $12
One standout rover (whatever terminology you wish to apply) plus three other selections = $9.

You mention that you are an amateur when it comes to punting.

Be aware that trifectas are among the most difficult of bets to win - that's why the dividends are often huge.

Take my advice and learn as much as you can about betting in general before you even consider punting as a profitable business.

This forum offers some great information and there are always people willing to provide you with answers to questions you may have.

Take all ideas on board, do some research and even when you feel confident that you might have struck something like a winning method, trial it on paper for a while before risking your money.

Research and information are the key words. There is no need to rush into things. There are always races to bet on. When you ARE ready to bet you can then bet with at least some degree of confidence.

I meant to mention that trifectas were the reason I became a place bettor. My rover was coming in the first three more often than not, but I just couldn't find the other two. Or at the time didn't have deep enough pockets to cover most of the field as in Equine Investor's example.

I looked at some stats for placegettors in an attempt to find some common factors.

Stats aren't much help in this case, they are good to help find winners, but plenty of placegettors have a wide range of characteristics.

However, if one can identify the winner thru stats, then its a just a matter of finding the other 2 placegettors.

WHAT I FOUND:
# Most placegettors are in top 12 by pre-post market.
# Ran in top 6 at either of past 2 starts
# Ranked in top 12 by $$/race
# Win % of 10%+
# Place % of 33%+
# Distance - if 2 or more starts, 33% place record.

Don't think this will eliminate many horses however. So one is left with a combo like:
1st - standout 1 horse
2nd & 3rd - box 8 or 9 horses.

Cost for half unit of $36.
Flexi for $5 = 7%.

ANYONE ELSE WITH SOME IDEAS ON ANY OF THIS??

Try this
Target races with 7-9 races only.
4 runners 1st.
5 " 2nd.
7 " 3rd. Cost $80@$1.00ea.

Calculation is done like this 4*4*5=80.
You deduct 1 off 2nd. sels. then deduct 2 off the 3rd. sels.
Keep this formula, you will need it.

You will need a bank of at least 80 times your bet beceause runs of 30 outs are common.
The odds will not be denighed.
You will find the first 10 in the pre-post market in the newspaper will dominate most winning trifectas.

Even with 7-9 runners you will find it challenging .
Do a dry run of at least 150 races with past or future results.
Try a method of sorting them in AVERAGE PRIZE MONEY ORDER,
its just as good as anything else beceause the place getters (2nd,& 3rds)quit often defy logic.

If you're new to punting, trifectas may not be the ideal way to go. You can experience a long, long, long time between drinks. Taking large multiple combinations adds up to a lot of dough with no guarantee that individual payouts will return any value dividend. I agree 100 percent with Privateer - do your trial on paper - and on FUTURE, not past races. Good luck Tam and if you ever work out the mysteries of the trifecta, let us all know! :smile:

PS: It will be the QUALITY of your selections, not the quantity of your combinations, that will keep you in the game.
