It was suggested that Kiwi trainers have targeted the winter carnival due to their perception that it represents "easier pickings" than the mainstream autumn and Spring carnivals. That is not to say that NZ bred/trained runners will not "clean up" again this Spring.
Let's give credit where it is due and acknowledge that even if a large number of their high priced yearlings have gone to Asia there is so much depth in their breeding industry that even their so-called "second stringers" are more than capable of competing against our best and taking a large portion of available prizemoney with them back home "over the ditch."
In respect of syndication, you're right but can't you see the benefit of introducing potentially thousands of new racegoers and participants who can enjoy themselves for an "affordable" amount? I suspect that most do not really expect to return a profit but the excitement and entertainment value they receive compensates to some degree for their "expensive" hobby.
