Oh that's a brilliant story, I like the way he told her - that's gold!

Here's a story for you, it's mine and it's true.

I won $7,500 one day after picking a trifecta, this is circa 1984.
In those days, you had to bet 10 minutes before the race as it closed well before they jumped.

I took the three shortest horses in a boxed trifecta after the radio tote callout.

By the time they jumped I had actually boxed the three rank outsiders in a horse race in Newcastle on a Tuesday afternoon.

Imagine my astonishment as they crossed the line locked together, I had nearly not listened to the race,as I gave up because the odds were all wrong.

But here's the real gruesome story later...

I had followed a horse for a while called Louisville Lip at the trots, and it was going around pretty short but with no real opposition.

I put $5,000 on it on the tote - stupid, but I was at home and had no bookie account.

The horse went around real short and lead all the way...

Coming into the straight, another horse was cutting it down, they get to the line and it's a photo...

5 agonising minutes later, Louisville Lip gets the photo by a nostril.

As I'm wiping the sweat from my brow and having a cold drink, thinking I'll never do that again, geez I was lucky. The course commentator breaks into the broadcast and says "the warning siren has sounded, there's a protest alleging interference over the last 50 metres, 2nd against the winner"

I'm like "what the hell, this has got to be a joke"

I had to wait a further 10 minutes for the result.

"Protest upheld"

Apparently Louisville Lip had layed out under pressure and run the challenger off the track.

I did 5K cold.

Lesson learnt!!!

I think it was 1983 the night it was beaten by Distant Thunder, but can't be sure, I erased the name of the winner from my memory forever.
