I think it depends entirely on your angle.
One angle I have takes 30 seconds to make selections over 5 states and 40 races.
Another angle I have would take at least a couple of hours.
It really all depends.
There are people who pour over stewards reports, replays, dissect times for hours at a time and arrive at roughly the same point as the guy who clicks a button.
But sometimes they have a bigger advantage.
It's always been a view of mine, that if punters spent half as much time seeking out the best odds on their selections, as they did doing the form, they'd be much better off.

I had occasion to be in the city of Melbourne the other day and stepped into a TAB with my laptop. A few guys were debating how much they should have on the odds on favourite. They were running from wallcharts to the newspaper, looking at the market movers, looking at the tips.
They decided to have $100 each on the favourite.
As it jumped, the favourite was $1.60 when the pool closed.

They could have had $1.75 with Read, they could have had $1.90 with Betfair.
That's a big difference on a short priced horse and a big difference at the end of the week.
