And specifically Race 8.
I rarely post about my dog, Star Diamond, unless in response to a query. But just looking through the fixed odds for tomorrow night, they've got him marked at $2.60. I've made this point about him in the past, the dog trialed twice at The Meadows when I had him, ran near record back split both times and could only manage 30.30s. In a heat of the Silver Chief he ran 5.01 to the first split and fell in running 30.20 on a night where more races broke 30secs at The Meadows than any other night in the history of the joint. Another night there he must have led by six and ran 3rd or 4th from memory.
$2.60 looks well under the odds to me, even though I hope they're right and he bolts in.
People wonder why this dog can come from behind to win over 500m some nights, yet lead by anything up to 10 lengths on other nights and get run down, the secret I believe is that when he leads clearly he tries so hard on the lure that he quite simply has nothing left when turning for home. Whereas if he has found some trouble and not led for any reason through the back split, he saves enough energy checking off heels, etc to have that little bit more stamina for the last section.
This is totally consistent with his form.
