The time at Ballarat was ordinary - 84.1 secs for 1400m. Would need to be at least 1 sec faster to be any good - times in the east are a lot faster than WA.

Times can help as you say - especially if you see a fast time on a track that is not known for good times. Ignore fast times at Hawkesbury (I could run fast there), Wyong or tracks in northern NSW where it appears any old thing can run good times.

The provincial/country tracks to look out for are:

NSW
Newcastle
Cessnock
And to lessor extent Kembla

VIC
Geelong
Cranbourne
Mornington
Sale
Bendigo
Kyneton

Qld
Toowoomba

If you see good times ran at these tracks, the form will often hold up in the city.

Ballarat is moderate when it comes to times, however if it was a quick time then worth looking at. As a rough guide - add 0.5secs to times ran at Ballarat to compare with Flemington. However, for 1600m races there, you don't need to add any time for comparisons.
