According to an old man that i met in the seventies this was a system that had been popular in the 1950s.
The actual rules were that you work your way up the prices, starting with the favourite, and the first horse in the race with R as the third letter of the name is the selection.
As I recall there was a severe recoupment staking plan which relied on there being at least one winner per day.
