My modus operandi when taking trifectas is to go with 2 selections to win.
Add 1 or 2 more to those for 2nd. with remaining selections added to 3rd position.
e.g. 2+4+8 computes to 2x3x6=$18-00 for a 50 cent unit.
I have ripped all my hair out for the times I have had the winner(at a good price) but 1 of my selections for 3rd gets into 2nd place.
the only way to overcome this problem is to put all place selections in for 2nd. and 3rd.
The computation for the above combination then becomes 2x7x6=$42-00 for a 50 cent unit.
The problem now is that you have in effect outlaid $21-00 on each of your win selections.
One of your win selections salutes at 20/1, you have the placings in order and the trifecta pays $200-00 for a 50 cent unit.
i.e. You are $200-00 worse off,(or thereabouts) than if you had backed your selections for a win.
Strangely, some of my best trifecta collects have come from small outlays in the manner of taking one horse to win, another for 2nd. and the field for 3rd.- 50c. unit, or alternatively 2 selections for 1st. and 2nd. and the field for 3rd.
One of the biggest conundrums I have faced with punting is the psychological barrier concerning the size of a bet.
I have no problem losing $100-00 in $10-00 lots over the course of the day but would not dream of investing $100-00 in one hit.
What is the best policy?
More on less or less on more.
The answer's a "pineapple".
