The Stewards of the Hong Kong Jockey Club introduced the Hong Kong International Vase as a third international race in December 1994 to encourage Hong Kong owners to import top class stayers. The race was accorded Group 2 status in 1996 and became a Group 1 in 2000 when Daliapour won for Great Britain.
This year, contested at a distance of 2400 metres on the turf, the Cathay Pacific Hong Kong Vase is part of the Cathay Pacific Hong Kong International Races programme, which will be run this year on Sunday, 12 December, at Sha Tin Racecourse.
Seven Gr.1 winners will assemble for the Vase, won for the last two years by French runners, Ange Gabriel (2002) and Valle Enchante (2003).
