I back AGAINST my team quite often. If I think the opposition has a genuine chance of beating my team and I think they are value, then sure thing. Look at how well my team the Brisbane Lions have gone the last few years, but I've done pretty well betting against them (especially on the line). On the other hand, I hardly ever bet ON my team.
