Hi guys.
I didn’t hear the third at Belmont yesterday (some of us aren’t professional punters and have to work). But I’d like to put in a good word for Darren McCaullay, who was the caller. I’ve been listening to race calls since 1965, back in the dark ages of Ken “London to a brick” Howard - generally, you could bet on the brick won as he was so inaccurate.
Darren is right up there with the best of them for accuracy and professionalism, the two qualities I look for in a call. A little bit of colour and flavour is OK but not at the expense of accuracy. I’d bet that he still called them correctly as they went to the line.

The West Australian had a story on the winner of the third at Belmont as it was a bit special, which is why Darren might have strayed a little. Firstly, King Jugah shares some owners and a trainer with Northerly. Secondly, he’s been a maiden for 37 starts but his record is not that bad – he’d had 8 seconds and 5 thirds, and his last 3 starts were consecutive 2nds at Belmont, which is why he was 13/8 favourite yesterday. So I wouldn’t put Deadly in the same bag as some of the duff callers you guys get upset with.
Cheers.
