Regarding staying grounded...I hear ya Mav. Years ago, I used to commence betting on any given day without a clear strategy. One Saturday I managed to pick 19 winners across the country (at all manner of odds) by 3pm. I was well ahead ( about 2.5k I recall) placing smallish bets.
So what did I do? Upped the amount I was betting without giving consideration to the type of races I was betting on.
I then hit a losing streak, upped the bets even more... and managed to lose the lot by 5.30pm! That was the last time I let that happen.
For XPT. I usually bet one runner to win if I think it is a standout...regardless of the odds. If I am looking for some value in "tricky" races (most midweek Class 1 races and quite often the open races)....I will go wide in a couple of different ways, depending on field size.
Usiing C1 races as an example. Sometimes I will level stake or bet various percentages of my pot on up to 3 runners. One runner would be the one I assess as having superior speed, number two is the class runner and number three may be the one that will be at big odds due to a huge weight advantage and the market ignoring the way the horse recently won its maiden. Sometimes I play around with the combination on the three runners....say 50-60% of the pot on the standout and the rest e/w betting the next two selections if they are at value odds.
I usually have a goal in mind about how much I want to win on a particular race if it looke doable, I put a strategy in place to try and hit that goal.
Then I use all my powers to stop myself from betting on those huge field lotteries in Melbourne on most Saturdays!
