I think this might come down to what you're chasing. If you're looking at the longer shots then place betting is more predictable. I'm one of those fools who chase place divs on favourites(oh no! I'll go broke).This is a real problem as what is a $1.50 div at jump ends up paying $1.00 .......maybe! Covering all bases gets me those stupid returns when a hot favourite pays $1.30 to win & $1.90 the place.
