The mechanical measurement is to make sure you don't include any situational variables and keeps things on a level playing field, if yu understand how standard deviation works you can get a good idea of why there are peaks and troughs in performances. Just knowing that 68% of a runners performance will fall within 1 standard dev provides a good starting point.
