Spotting a 'Smokey' Dawson
This might be a good time of year to look for some smokeys.
There are usually signposts in the past performances that indicate what the performance of a horse is going to be in a race.Things like improved speed ratings, class drops etc. seem to always put the crowd on a horse. Shrewd stables often do everything possible to cover-up an up-coming stable/connections clean up win. It's a bit tricky to spot this. Here is an easy [?] way to spot the playing of some genuine smart money before the race. 1. List all horses that went off in last race at $8 or over, and did not end in the money. Any win, place or good run within 3 or 4 lengths of the winner will cause public action and destroy the plan. 2. Now going to the morning lines. Reduce the morning odds by 50%. If it is $15, make it $7.50 etc.. 3. Five minutes before post, bet any horse that has been bet down to the new lower price. With none of the obvious reasons for the betting, it is almost certain that the horse has been 'set' and is a probable Smokey and a juicy over. It may not win, but you know the stable and connections are putting money where it thinks it has some action. Can anyone think of anything else to look for ? I'm going to give it a try this Sat. and will post my results. Anyone else who does, well we can compare notes :-) Last edited by crash : 25th August 2005 at 03:53 PM. |
