New comer
Hi to all
I am new to Australia and relatively new to horse racing. I have a quick question I wouldn't mind getting some feedback from. Which tracks and days of the week are the best to have a bet on (usually via the net). My preferred bet is a first 4. Thanks Murgo |

MURGO
If I was new to Australia I would start with Major Metropolitan meetings on Saturday.
I say that because to get any decent form papers such as the "WIZARD / SPORTSMAN its confined for some unknown reason to Saturdays . One needs to get a handle on the wealth of information contained in these 2 fine form papers to really make a go of racing here in the sense of properly handicapping a race . Also there are many very good FREE proffessionally asessed races if you know where to look i.e. everyrace.com ( under "REWARDS ) , winnerinsix etc After Metropolitan comes major provincial centre,s such as Bendigo, Wyong , Ballarat etc Then Country meetings such as Wellington , Narromine etc Hope this is of some assistance to you. Cheers. Darky. |

Hi Murgo,
There is a first 3 called a trifecta. There is no first 4. You must be from the US [?] Also a place bet is coming 1st.2nd or 3rd. There is no 4th.dividends. The 'Winning Post' out Thursdays covers Friday to Mon racing and isn't bad for $3.50 Cheers. Last edited by crash : 1st February 2006 at 04:13 PM. |

Thanks for the info Crash and DarkyDog - very useful.
Crash mate - either I have been losing money on an imaginary bet called first 4 or you must also be a new comer? I am originally from South Africa (no rugby or cricket jibes please) - the first 4 is called a quartet in SA. Anyway - it is positions 1,2,3 and 4. Sometimes not offered on every race here in Aus. I guess my system needs some refining before I continue with the Aussie races. Cheers Murgo |

Hi Murgo and welcome to the forum.
Best places to bet are metro meetings on saturdays the form which is available is far better than any you will get during the week. I have always been a fan of the best bets as far as a form guide goes it is compact and much easier to go over than the Sportsman and Winning Post and alot of the other publications out there, Obviously they have there advantages in being more extensive going into alot more older form something like there previous 10 runs or something in the sportsman but it can be hard just to go over something quickly if you want to. As far as the 1st4 goes it is available on selected races as far as Unitab goes not sure about the other states can be a good way to make a buck if you can snare one I would also suggest Quinella betting to you as a source which can be quite profitable usually boxing 4 horses for $1 you can get some nice divis doing that for an outlay of only $6. All I will say is check out the forum most of us put tips up for different race meetings around the place over the weekend and Maverick, Sven and Sportz can all prove good to follow as far as the brisbane meetings go ie. Doomben and Eagle Farm. Most of us on here are fairly knowledgable just some of us like myself are a little more pigheaded in there methods than others. Other than that I will say best of luck on the punt and I hope to see you around more on the forum and feel free to add whatever you like. |

Good morning all
Thanks again for the excellent replies that I have received. I am throughly enjoying the racing scene here in Aus and being part of the forum. Even though I am bit clueless at the mo. I had some very good luck in the beginning when I first arrived and was playing the first 4 (doubled my money in a couple of days) and feeling pretty good, but then in my eagerness I started betting on some mid-week races and have had a shocking run lately. Some real donkeys getting places and my elimination process has missed them. I will stick to the Saturday races for a while and give the quinella a go. Cheers Murgo |

No need to be a smarty Murgo [great start mate, I can see we are going to get on:-)]. I'm a win bet man [35yrs. punting] and I don't keep up with every new fangled fangle the TAB come up with. Aren't first 4's a newish fangle ? |

Hi Murgo Not sure if anyone else has mentioned but William's threads are worth a watch, comes up with some good winners but rarely gets much acclaim. Also being from South Africa perhaps you can post a few tips now and again. The West Australian TAB covers a South African meeting each Wed evening here in the west and although the smallish betting pools don't make for good value sometimes, the meets are slowly gaining interest amongst the local punting fraternity.

G'day Crash
No disrespect intended. I am not sure how new the first 4 is? But I find it interesting. Had a some success on Geelong 6 today. But just went down on Ipswich 7 - didn't see no. 11 Sarge McGrath coming anywhere near to a 4th place. Friends ? Cheers Murgo |
