Default Rating the Victorian Jockeys

RATING THE VICTORIAN JOCKEYS

I would be interested to hear from anyone who rates jockeys.

Here is the current premiership table. C Newitt is 4 and B Rawiller is 12.

Now myself, and different to this list, I would have Rawiller above Newitt. I would have Arnold above Symonds.

I just hate it when the rider puts the horse I have money on in the wrong position. I notice it when some jockeys just can't get the hang of a certain track. Oliver had a huge run of outs at Flemington in 2007-2008. At one stage I was making money getting off the horse I picked when I saw D Oliver next to its name at Flem. Michael Rodd is OK, but gee sometimes he rides dumb.

Any one game to rate the jockeys? A good argument is always a chance with a list. LOL

I myself rate the top 10 jockeys and give a special boost for any jockey who has won of the horse prior. I need a special reason to back any other. Some jockeys (no names) I wouldn't back even if they had won the Cox Plate on it.

C.Williams
S.W.Arnold
B Rawiller
C.Newitt
D.Oliver
Nicholas Hall
S.R.King
K.Mc Evoy
D.Dunn
C.D.Symons
L.Nolen
D.Gauci
L. Mc Gill

my base list is very similar to yours Brendan , and then i plus or minus depending on how they ride the track and if the particular horse suits there type of riding style and whip hand.

eg , I'd give a big plus for old Gauci if hes on a leader , newitt if the horse responds to his aggressive style ect ect..

You couldn't possibly have Nick Hall in front of Dunn?

In fact I would have Dunn in the top 3 atleast

Hi maverick1993,

yes, thats a good way of looking at it. You raise fine points I will lok at. I just look to see if the jockey has won on the horse before. So if its Newitt and he has won, and I like the horse for that race, its ok. Gauci does rate front runners well. Hot jockeys over the past 3 months, too. My stats show B Rawiller over the past 3 months has had 223 rides for 66 winners at over 29%. To me its a feedback thing between the trainers and jockeys: the jockey is full of confidence and rides some winners, and the trainers start to seek him out giving him more winners, and so it goes. At least for a while, and then some other jockey goes hot, and the trainers start seeking them out...

I was loathe the back Chasm yesterday, despite recent good form. I liked Vigor at $6 in that field, but I had a saver on a quinella with Chasm partly because he had the hot jockey on board. So, sometimes it can be handy to look at the jockeys.

When the cats away - last week there were barely any headline jockeys at Flemington. But if you rated what was left, Logan, Symonds, and Gundogdu would have rated very well. And they won more than their fair share that day.

Who would you push out from Rawiller, Arnold, and Williams to fit Dunn in?

I'll say this much for Hall, he gets quite a few winners at Flemington.

Well to be honest I am not sure you can put the real top bracket of jockeys in an order, but the top 5 in Vc I would say, in no particular order,

Williams
Arnold
Oliver
Dunn
Rawiller.

I would leave Newitt out atm, he aint riding aswell as he has last couple of years, maybe for obvious reasons.

And I omit McEvoy only for the fact he is in Syd, but when he comes to town, I rate him as the equal to those 5

Correction from a previous post:

B Rawiller is 44 from 223 over the past 3 months at just over 19%.

I like to look at a top 8-10, plus a jockey that has won previously on the horse.

Usually a good bet Brendon, the riding ranks are very deep in melbourne, and in sydney for that matter

It works OK often if I'm split between two horses. I'd choose Williams in that case over an apprentice any day.
