Lionhearted Girl
If ever there was an aptly named horse it is certainly South Australian mare Lionhearted Girl. Not only because of her determination but because she is by 'All Courage' out of 'Lions Rose'.
Early in her career she was trained in Port Macquarie by Mark Quinn and won the odd fairly ordinary country race but was definitely no standout. She was then taken over by South Australian trainer Ian Walker in 2012, as a 5 year old, when most mares are thinking about the breeding paddock. After a reasonable start on South Australia’s country circuit, it all changed in November 2012 when she won a race at Mount Gambier by 10 lengths. Another couple of excellent country wins and she won her first city race at Morphettville in January this year. She was a six year at this point and led all the way saluting by a couple of lengths. Suddenly the penny dropped. She had always been an on pacer but this horse is one that must lead to show her best. Since the win at Mount Gambier she is almost impossible to catch if able to lead, and even through she often looks beaten multiple times down the straight, she fights like the great Vo Rogue. She has 12 career wins out of 42 starts, but look at this amazing statistic. Since she moved to South Australia she has won 8 out of 20 starts and remarkably has run either 1st or 2nd every time she is able to lead, with only one exception. To top her off three of her win have been in my system this year and she always starts at a healthy price! A horse I would dearly love to have in my back yard.
