When Do you jump on or off ?
I like to follow up on my winners usually and for good results..Merlot Now for instance was very good to me...Bomber bill is the same..
Kept on Spirit Of Tara and she finally saluted...but jumped off Portland Singha after backing it the last 2 races..still kicking myself.. I suppose you have to forgive a horse 1 bad run and that will be my rule from now on,,,2 strikes and your out,,,,just wondering what you guys do..i read where Sportz missed out on a huge winner after jumping off..and how many times has that happened to all of us.... I'll still analyse the race as usual but i think i'll need more of a reason to jump off than (Bad barrier) as with Portland Singha....good horses, good jockeys in form can overcome these setbacks.. Was very interested in a post on another forum that mentioned following a horse you think has champion qualities and sticking with them.. Horses Like Lonhro, sunline ect..if you had followed these horses regardless you would of been way ahead.. the therory is that champion horses can overcome bad barriers conditions unsuitable distance ect and still win with just sheer class.. ...is there a horse on the horizon that looks a champion ? In brissie theres Virage De Fortune..although i'm not convinced she'll be a champion.. Bently Biscuit is one i think might make the grade.. as for the 2yo's coming back .... Mnesyne , Snitzel and Written tycoon are all horses that i think might have champion qualities.. any other nominations are apreciated....we should start a list and see how we go. |

i know a punter who bets in the "k's" and he told me years ago that when he focused on a coming winner he was always prepared to back it 3 times.
i know its hard to do but depends how many horses a person backs. with selective punting this probably works. does for him anyway.

Darci Brahma would have been the horse that I am kicking myself the most about I was all over it last start then just didn't like what I saw should have given it a week extra of fitness and aclimatisation and all of a sudden it produced what I was expecting the week before.
As far as when to get on and when to get off can't help mate because I don't know the answer to that myself yet you just have to know all horses can only stay on top for so long I usually get off them 5 runs in from a spell if they do not produce if there winning or going very close I stay with them usually until they put 2 bad ones together. |

I think as far as following a horse for one more run you're ************ed if you do and ************ed if you don't. If you would have backed Portland Singa or Darci Brahma and they had lost you would have been just as dirty on yourself.
The problem I see with finding champions is that feeling of un-official ownership you end up with, it can sometime sway our decisions the way of your champion. I know it's clouded my vision at times. A good recent example was a horse called Zankle, I backed it when it won it's Geelong maiden. I know it was only a maiden but it looked like a very, very smart horse. It cost me some cash to find out it's smart and that's all. As far as future champs, I think we might have seen one or two during the carnival. The weekend's racing had a real "class" feel about it. If a couple of the young one's can find a length or two, which they can after spending winter in QLD's weather. Darci Brahma is certainly bred to be one. |

It costs you a lot less to find out that has is just average potential than it does the owner....in real terms we as punters are in a better position to make more from racing than the owners...provided you are prepared to put the cash on....remember we don't have training fees or vet checks or spelling fees or anything like that....sure we have our own outlays...like the stake...but if managed properly and you have the funds to back it up it is possible to make a profit from every horse you follow...well maybe not all of them but if your judgment is right then 70% of them....take a look at any horse that has a 25% win strike or more and work out what it has paid at each of it's wins and see if there was a profit to be made.....now i know trying to find these horse at a young age before these wins is not easy.....but is it any easier finding winners on most days....you just need to use rules...such as the right trainers or the right owners...the more successfull owners do get the better horses just like the trainers....do some research before adding a horse to your stable....treat it as it should be treated like an investment...if you do the home work you can have a winning stable....sure your name is not on the ownership papers but then again it is not on the tax return slip.

i think Bentley Biscuit could be real class....it followed the trend of the champions by killing them in its first start....of the 2yo's resuming i like mnemosyne

Thats interesting Raw, i was the opposite, i wanted to see what it did in the Sires and thought it was one of the best runs in the race and duly backed it in the TJ.
