Lucky or Unlucky?
After having a win Saturday night at the casino i decided to yesterday take a quaddie in adelaide.
Having declared Testifiable a certainty i took it one out and had quite a few in each of the other legs. After getting the first winner home, Testifiable duly salutes and all of a sudden we are half way to a quaddie. 3rd leg i put in all my fancied runners and then at the last minute threw a horse in who i knew had ability but had not heard much about recently (apparently been in dubai) Perfectaly Ready. What do you know it comes in. I am now 3 legs down one to go. Last leg i have the 6 favourites according to the TAB and with the Vic Tab you are able to see the approximates and after seeing that the shortest dividend was $3300 for $1 (i had for .50 c) I decided that i would cover myself just in case and make it a profitable day regardless. $11,000 was the longest dividend i could have got. In covering myself i outlayed $200. Every horse above 40-1 i put $10 on, every horse between 20-1 and 40-1 i had 20 on. and the only horse that was left was sojustremember this at 13-1 which i had $30. Well i missed the Quaddie, but due to my bets i had $10 on the winner which saluted at $112. Spent $280 Return $1120 What are you guys thoughts? Do you ever do the same when taking Quaddies or treble's? especially when you know the return will be large if you get it right? |

I don't take bets like quaddies or trebles, but if I was in your place I would have done the same thing.

I never save. Techically, and from a financial standpoint, it SORT OF makes sense, but from a punting perspective, purely, it doesn't.
As stand alone bets, what you are doing is outlaying $200 on horses who you didn't think could win. From an analytical perspective, it is incorrect. From an insurance brokers standpoint (my father in law is one!) he would say it was very prudent, very wise. I say if you didn't think they could win, you shouldn't be backing them. I'd be willing to bet very good money that if you summed up all the outlay on saver bets on Quaddies done by punters and totalled the collects, it'd be a big negative figure. |

Makes sense to me Real Deal...you couldn't lose.
I remember when i backed England at 9's in that oneday mini world cup cricket thingy comp a couple of years back in England...they made it to the finals against West Indies who were the underdogs...and of course the Indies won and i lost....but if i was on the ball i should of backed the Indies in the final as they were 3/1 or something... Sportz pointed this out to me ...of course after the match...just to laugh at me i guess I started off in punting having savers..but worked out in the long run they weren't saving me anything...if i had invested the money i had put on my savers onto my actual selections i would have increased my percentage.....my savers i guess nowadays are my 1st4's and trifectas.. I guess with you garunteed of winning a good amount...covering your bases made sense in this scenario ...well done |

Yeah Mav, sport is one of the great examples of where saving is a great idea. I do it regularly with success. Backing a team or player to win and then if and when they make the final, backing the opposition. And this racing scenario was pretty much the same. Real Deal backed a certain number of selections to win, and then when he reached the final race still alive, he backed the opposition to make sure that he got something out of it. I think it was the sensible thing to do. By the way, Real Deal, where did the best of your original quaddie selections finish? 2nd? If that was the case, and you hadn't done as you did, I can imagine how you would have felt. |

It's the safe way, to save, but who wants safety. You need a sack of LARGE BALLS to WIN!!

Well sportz, on that topic, i backed Grant Denyer to win Dancing with the stars at the start of the series @ $15.00, and haven't taken a saver on Kostya Tszu tonight, despite him being in the final. Not as sensible, but we'll see what happens |

Well, he was the obvious winner tonight (basically a certainty), so it was probably an okay decision. I think I probably would have still had a small saver though.
