In North America I see odds. On IASBet.com I see dollars and cents figures. What do these represent?

For example, if I see $2.30 does that mean odds of 2.3:1? This would imply I would be paid 3.30 on the win. Or is the figure the 'will pay' figure meaning I would get $2.30 for each $1.00 wagered?

Thanks,

-Duck

TheDuck,

The quoted figure is what you will be paid including your $1 stake. So a figure of $5.00 means the "old style" odds are 4:1

A return question if I may - you mentioned that all North American betting is tote only - do you have multiple totes covering your races or is it just a single government run tote? Do they have websites?

Thanks becareful. The totes in Canada are run by the track with 'guidelines' stated and monitored by a government agency called the OLGC (Ontario Lotteries and Gaming Commission -- similar ones in other provinces). A similar thing runs in the U.S. Under some casino licenses there is wagering offered in casinos and certain areas but it's difficult to know what's going on there so you have to know what you're doing. There is also off-shore sportsbooks offered on-shore, if you will. I'm certainly no expert on these but it would seem they are ill advised.

As for websites, there's tons. I find the easiest place to start is where it all comes together. Then there are links from there. If you go to http://www.equibase.com you will have no shortage of information. Also http://www.drf.com (Daily Racing Form) which is our most ubiquitous racing form.

Sorry, one other thing.

To see one of our totes you might go to http://209.135.76.15/cgi-bin/webtote.exe?op=1&np=1&ep=1 to see one in action. A tote at one track offers the races at other tracks. You can bet on any race at any track. They have the monitors up in large sitting areas for folks who like to have a few on the go.

To return the volley in our tennis question game, do your horses run Show or not? I see a Win and Place payout, but it's like you have a W/P for first, and two Places. We have a W/P/S payout for the first horse in, P/S for second and Show for third.

By the way, is IASBet for real? Best odds available and supposed to be always better than the tote? Compared to here you guys are awfully spoiled!

Thanks for that - I will have a look at the websites when I get a chance.

Our "place" is the equivalent of your "show" so it pays on 1st, 2nd or 3rd if 8 or more runners in the race and on 1st and 2nd only if between 5 and 7 runners (no place betting if less than 5 runners). We dont have the third option for 1st/2nd only.

Yes IAS is for real and pays guaranteed better than any of the three totes for selected races (basically the main Saturday racing and, I think, some Wednesday meetings) but there are some conditions on bet size and placing bets at least 1 minute before start.
