What a useless call in the last at Canterbury yesterday. As the horses were entering the straight and making the run for home that non descript caller said:

"Yes Chief's got two behind him. They are Brett's Bist..eh Britt's Best. It's an awkward name to spit out at 30 miles an hour."

I couldn't give the proverbial two hoots about how difficult it is to pronounce Britt's Best.

I'm certainly not interested in hearing the caller, at a vital time of the race, interrupt the call of the race to make himself feel good by telling us why he mispronounced Britt's Best.

It was very, very amateurish. Very, very unprofessional.

One of the early races at Belmont was no better - the last 20 seconds or so of the race were devoted to the caller raving on about "If you are on this horse you can start celebrating now, he has finally broken his maiden, after x starts, etc, etc, etc" - only after the race was finished did the caller decide it would be a good idea to let you know who was coming 2nd, 3rd, etc.

That's pretty ordinary. There are degrees of incompetence and unprofessionalism.

I don't think you can get much worse than after correcting a mistake in a call, stopping the call of the race at a vital time to justify to everyone why you made the mistake.

He should be severely reprimanded and told if anything like that happens again it's his last call.

Maybe he should be told by the stewards that he has to trial to their satisfaction before his next race call, or his trainer may decide to spell him after that performance.

Yes, I heard both those calls and have come to the conclusion that race calling is not the professional way it used to be.

Give me the late Bill Collins (the accurate one) anyday.

Hi guys.
I didn’t hear the third at Belmont yesterday (some of us aren’t professional punters and have to work). But I’d like to put in a good word for Darren McCaullay, who was the caller. I’ve been listening to race calls since 1965, back in the dark ages of Ken “London to a brick” Howard - generally, you could bet on the brick won as he was so inaccurate.
Darren is right up there with the best of them for accuracy and professionalism, the two qualities I look for in a call. A little bit of colour and flavour is OK but not at the expense of accuracy. I’d bet that he still called them correctly as they went to the line.

The West Australian had a story on the winner of the third at Belmont as it was a bit special, which is why Darren might have strayed a little. Firstly, King Jugah shares some owners and a trainer with Northerly. Secondly, he’s been a maiden for 37 starts but his record is not that bad – he’d had 8 seconds and 5 thirds, and his last 3 starts were consecutive 2nds at Belmont, which is why he was 13/8 favourite yesterday. So I wouldn’t put Deadly in the same bag as some of the duff callers you guys get upset with.
Cheers.

Certainly agree Rain Lover with your assessment of Darren McAullay , he is one of the best (i think) going around.

Wouldn't surprise me if he was lured to the East Coast in the coming years!!!

They have already tried TESTAROSSA (SKY not long ago), Darren decided to stay in the west, where of course it's best.
