Question Betting Fluctuations

Fellow Cash Converters,
Has anyone done any research into price fluctuations? For example, if 3 horses start at the same price, say 5/1, does the horse that firms to that price, eases to the price or stays at 5/1 through betting perform better for the punter? If there was a discrepancy it could help back/lay certain horses. Thanks!
