Default Great Aussie horse trainer dies

"JACK Denham, who died in Sydney yesterday aged 85, was as enigmatic and mysterious as he was successful.

Denham trained 59 Group 1 winners - putting him 11th on the all-time Australian list - in a career that spanned a remarkable 54 years.

His first feature race winner, 1955 Doomben Cup winner Persian Link, came 54 years before his last, this year's Randwick Guineas winner Metal Bender.

In that half a century Denham won each of the Big Four - Caulfield Cup, Melbourne Cup, Cox Plate and Golden Slipper - and trained a host of champions.

His greatest, Might And Power, is regarded as one of the turf's all-time-greats, winning the Caulfield and Melbourne Cup double in 1997 and the Cox Plate the following year."
