![]() Can any one explain to me why the sandown cup is only regarded as an Open race with value of 125k yet there are G3s on the same card with similar prize money.
The Listed races on the card have a value of 100k |

![]() The race that is now called the "Sandown Cup" is actually a new race. It's only been around for 2-3 years I think. It is not the traditional Sandown Cup that most people would know.
The race that is now called the "Zipping Classic" is actually the race that used to be called the "Sandown Cup". A while back, they decided to change the name from Sandown Cup to Sandown Classic. And then this year they changed it again to the Zipping Classic after the horse Zipping which won the race for the last 4 years. Then after changing the name to "Classic", a few years ago they decided to reintroduce the "Sandown Cup" but this time it was a 3200m race. Last edited by Sportz : 12th November 2011 at 12:29 PM. |

![]() Considering the prize money you would think it would be at least graded to GR3

![]() Because it's a new race, it hasn't had much of a chance to be upgraded to listed or group status yet. But clearly the race club still wants to provide enough prizemoney to give the race some prestige befitting the name "Sandown Cup". And they would be hoping to have it upgraded to group or listed status in the near future.
