I was a big rap for trifectas and other exotic bets early in my betting life but I must say that they should probably be avoided. I always seemed to pick 1st and 2nd or 1st and 3rd or 2nd and 3rd. A roughie would always spoil my fun. I realised that all the money I wasted on tri's could have been place on wins and places that would have resulted in a payout. I will sometimes pick a quinnella and occassionally try a quaddie.

mystic,

If you want to come out in front leave out the favourite altogether.

You won't get a high win rate, but when you snare one you'll get value!

Try a 2x3x5 [economical with good potential payouts] with a couple of maybes in for third. Cost $15 a unit if my memory is correct.
Boxed tri is very poor value because you are giving every horse the same chance of winning and paying for the privelage.

Cheers.

I agree.

Alternately you could leave the 1st and 2nd favs out of the win position and try a 4x6x6 tri with the other top 6 pre post prices, but only bet in races with enough runners to ensure good return.

HI everyone,
personally I prefer to wait until I've got what I think is a good priced banker or rover and I'm pretty sure the favorite can't run a place.(Has been known to pay 000's + when the fav run's 3rd)Especially like dead tracks for this as you'd be suprised how many false fav's there are.

i feel another good idea is to concentrate on the country meetings where the chances of long priced horses running in the money is much more common rove your fancy with a few of these longer priced horses and you could get a pretty good collect even though the pools dont seem that big

Mystic,
I have to agree with the answers so far, one other intersting thing i find is after selecting the race i then like to check the "tipsters on the TAB" and if my selections match thier 3 selections ( i pick 4-5 for the tri ) i like to bring the bet in tighter with more units, if i have 2 matches i take it out a bit wider and 1 or less wider still
ex
3 match = MU-2/3/4 = 3 units
2 match = MU-3/4/5 = 2 units
1 or less = MU-4/5/5 = 1 unit

you could use any combo's you like.
my reasoning for this and i could be wrong is
that i have generally found most people follow the TAB tips and if it comes home the payout is smaller thus more units and so on.

Just an idea im playing with but its holding pretty true so far.

as with seeker11's thoughts im the same i now work on places mainly and have this as the main bread n butter and just play on the side with the tri's if they come home its a bonus.

also listed is a chart for pricing the exotics
