Okay, after Lonhro's great win in the Australian Cup, I thought I'd ask your opinions of the greatest horses and the greatest races you've seen or heard. Is Lonhro's win up there with the best?

Apparently, Greg Miles said it was the best performance in an Australian Cup or something like that. Is that right? I have great respect for Greg Miles, but personally I think the best Australian Cup win was in 1990. That was the year when Vo Rogue which had been written off by many, put in an incredible performance to hold off a field including Better Loosen Up, Super Impose, Stylish Century and Sydeston. Does anybody else remember that race? They replay it quite a bit on Radiotab up here and no matter how many times I hear it, I still get goosebumps. It was absolutely brilliant. Of course, I must admit that Vo Rogue is one of my favourite all time horses, so I guess I'm biased. However, Shane Templeton said on radio this morning that he also thought that was the best Australian Cup win.

Sportz, there are so many that i can remember, but i think Might and Power's caulfield cup , leading all the way in track record time and also by the biggest margin [7 Lengths].

I'm a bit biased in this one, the 1980 caulfield cup, when my favourite horse Ming Dynasty kicked clear in the staight and put 3 lengths on Kingston Town and then held off Hyperno, I was only 19 young then and the $10 i had on him at 40/1 concession was well received.

as one of the oldies on this forum i can recall some great races , right back to tullochs great first up return from the long illness but for me i think kingston towns 1982 cox plate rates the top list as he was well back and struggling approching the turn at the valley, so much so that the race caller said he cant win, well he did somehow ,winning his 3rd successive cox plate , the only horse to do this as far as i know.

Super Impose not a great record ?????? 2 Epsoms 2 Doncasters a Cox Plate and a Second in the Melbourne Cup maybe that was a misprint

Nevets,

I think what Shaun was referring to was the fact that Super Impose only won 20 of his 74 starts, that's 27%, quite low compared to most other 'great' horses. He's still right up there with the top horses I've seen however and those 4 consecutive big Randwick miles was an incredible performance.

Being probably one of the youngest posters on this forum, my memory doesn't go back as far as the races mentioned, but i think the Redoute's Choice Vs Testarossa race in the Caulfield Guineas was pretty special, even though Testa was beaten.
