![]() Pick them to win and back them for a place. Look for good horses with good trainers and good jockeys. Races between 1200 and 1600,maximum 12 starters, only consider the first three horses in the news paper or form guide betting, which ever you choose stick with the same source, any odds on no race.Horse must have 25%min win strike rate, last start no more than 14days.REMEMBER,$1.50 IS 50%ON YOUR MONEY,as an example.

![]() If you can get 1/3rd. win price for the place I agree with you 100%. If not, you are being ripped off and short changed. Cheers. |

![]() Crash,
There is no such thing as 1/3rd odds for the place in 8 or more races. To suggest that anything worse is a rip off is flawed mathematics in many cases. A horses place chance is not simply three times it's win chance. If an even money shot has a 50% win chance, how can it possibly have a 150% place chance based on that thinking? The best place betting scenario is a race where the favourite or the top two in betting dominate the market. Consider a race of 8 starters where the betting is as follows, with place prices in brackets; 2.50 (1.375) 2.50 (1.375) 9.00 (3.00) 12.00 (3.75) 17.00 (5.00) 17.00 (5.00) 26.00 (7.25) 101.00 (26.00) That's about a 262% place market. A $300 outlay placed proportionately would guarantee a $38 profit no matter the placings - and at 1/4 odds. If you find a bookie that bets these conditions you are on a winner. Many of the UK bookies do on the big carnival races over there - it's easy online. |

![]() Crash, do I take that you meant that if a horse is showing say $2.5 for the win , we need $1.50 a place ?? which can and does happen all the time , in fact it's not uncommon to see something like $1.90 he win and $1.60 the place.

![]() The $1.90 a win $1.60 a place is of course tote only.
See those divs as the horses load, place your bet, watch your "good thing" finish 2nd and then watch the price come up as $1.00, or if you're really lucky, $1.04. No betting to prices method should ever be trusted to the tote. |

![]() Quote: 'There is no such thing as 1/3rd odds for the place'... Not exactly what I said or meant Hammers. However, I should have been clearer and used an example. Yes Party, that is exactly what I mean regarding price. I never said those good place prices never happen though. Happens all the time, but so does $8.00 win and $2.00 the place. All I am pointing out is that to except those sort of place prices is poor punting strategy [ripping yourself off]. I was never saying that place betting per se is a rip-off [nowhere in my post that I can see]. One could say though, that generally speaking, place prices are often [very often] poor value compared to win prices. Cheers. [ This Message was edited by: crash on 2004-06-04 17:30 ] |

![]() Crash, yes I would have to agree overall,.... all I can say is that (as I have proven on this forum) the conveyances that i invest on AVERAGE $1.50 divi.
Hammers yes I agree also that sometimes I invest 1 minute b4 the off @ $1 40 , and get a divi of $1, very frustrating, but I have to take the average which is $1.50 in MY case. Although, I admit Crash that I haven't (so far) worked on the principle of obtaining 1/3 the win odds. I would consider it though IF there is any outfit out there that offers a fixed price for the place only??? |

![]() A $1.50 collect is a hard day at the office, Party [accidental ha ha]. 4 collects from 5 bets for just $1 profit and if 1 [or more] of them wins ? Well I just couldn't stand that sort of ...'action'. Cheers. |

![]() In my experience place betting = a quick trip to the poor house as there is no value long term - the $8.00 win & $2.00 place div's being the perfect example of what we see regularly.
If one has a selection method that can turn any sort of profit betting place only then surely it MUST show an equally good, if not better, profit when betting win only? |

![]() all fair comment, but still, personally I prefer the regular collects. As for the poor house, well it's still a fair way off, "I hope"
