I am a little confused on the class/type of race to avoid in my betting
Perhaps you astute members may be able to help me. I read to avoid: Cups and classics What about Stakes? Ted |

any race can be fair game ted, if you keep a good set of records they should help identify your weaknesses, but one cannot generalise & say "dont bet on this or that" as every punter is a bit different & should be able to find his area of excellence.
i listened to the "experts" for years & avoided the lower class races with a passion, nowadays the lowley maidens are my best performers...(the horses do alright too!) ![]() |

All races Ted :-)
Seriously though and only as a general rule, avoid races with less than 7 runners after scratchings, Cups, Hurdles, Maidens and 2yr. old races. Personally though, I add F&M, Stakes races, races over 2400m. or under 1100m., Sunday races and any race run in worse than dead condt. That's just my preferences though and there are plenty here who would bet on all of the above [and flies crawling up a wall too just for good measure]. yeh well life just aint the same without the flies crash, thank gods we live in a country full of them!
got to disagree with a few on your list, however agree that country cups & any type of mares race are events i instincively avoid. |

It F&M races I avoid. I have no problem Mares [only] races and of course I avoid Filly's [only] races, too immature for my taste.

Some of you don't seem to like feature races? Would you avoid the Gold Nugget at Ballarat today???
Personally, I think it was the best quality race and as such, the best betting race all day. However, I must say that on my ratings, 5 horses came up well ahead of the rest. If the ratings hadn't been so clear cut, perhaps I may not have been so keen on the race. Last edited by Sportz : 22nd September 2005 at 03:00 PM. |

Hi Ted Bluegum,
This is a good question, as it seems many of us here have our own ideas on which races to focus on, and hence which to discard. Similarly to Crash, I avoid Maidens, Hurdles and 2yo races (all seem too unpredictable), though I haven't found reason to rule out Cups yet. Since I bet for the place as well as the win, I too avoid races with 7 or fewer horses, so I will be able to collect on that 3rd place dividend if needed. For my system at least, Sundays and Mondays haven't seemed very promising, so I'm focusing on the 5 other days, with Saturdays being the obvious focus, followed by Wednesdays. Other than all of that, I'll look for qualifiers in all of the remaining races. At this point I don't have any restrictions on distance, though I'm only just barely profitable above 2000m, so I may end up making that my upper limit in the future. Track and weather conditions haven't had any influence on my results so far, though I'm a little surprised by this, as I would have assumed they would. Can't argue with the results. Good luck!

Thanks for the response..and being kind to this amatuer.
Im glad Davez is doing ok with his "maidens" I have been avoiding Cups and classics, Any jumping race , maidens, 2yr olds. 3 yr olds till end of Feb, individual female races ie fillies only and mares only, races between 1200 m and 2000 metres only. Can I ask the astute members? ..what about jockeys and trainers and premiership performances? Weights carried and barrier draws? Regards Ted |

Sportz,
Not completely against any race type except perhaps 900m races [we all have our favorites though] but for a newbie to racing asking advice ? The Nugget was an easy race to pick, not so some of the bigger stakes races on the Metro tracks. Race drivers start of in go-karts, not formula 1 :-) My system [No Brainer II] picked the winner of the Gold Nugget at Ballarat yesterday. I also had a good look at the race. How the hell Kounthekash with the weight it carried started favorite is beyond me. Royal Lakes last race was a strong 3rd. after being forced wide for most of the trip in a $100k Metro Quality, and there it was with 53kg. in the Nugget ? Money for nothing. |
